I have seen requests for information on how to enable/disable DRL’s. Enabling DRL’s is required for importing a car into Canada. Some people may think DRL’s are a good safety item. When available as an OEM option, Ford charges $25.00 for them. Some people may have DRL’s and hate them.
Unlike some earlier Ford products, which use a plug-in module for DRL’s, the 2012 Mustang uses a programmable “smart junction box” or GEM to enable DRL’s. There are no extra parts required. This procedure is known to work on the Boss 302 only. It may work on a V6 model. It probably will not work on a Mustang with HID headlights and may actually cause damage.
The GEM uses a PWM signal to run the low beam headlights at approx. 80% of normal intensity.
You will need a Ford IDS with module programming capability. Assuming you know how to program modules, you need to program the GEM with the following data. Note that only line 3 is different. However you must program all the lines. Any custom settings in the Info Center may need to be reset.
As always, use at your own risk.
