Ok bringing this thread back. Now that I have nothing to do while I wait for my Aluminator and other various parts to ship, it may be time to look at porting my CJ manifold.About the CJ manifold... Love it BUT.. I think they should come with a warning that says PORTING WILL BE REQUIRED
Thanks......I will look for the long mandrel. The sanding rolls I have used so as long as I can reach the deep recesses then I can do this. All you should need is a long mandrel for sanding cartridge rolls that fits your Dremel. Rolls with assorted grits from maybe 320 to 800 should be enough.
These tests are with "as delivered" manifolds unless otherwise specified. In this series of videos I have only seen the 2018 GT manifold being ported, so a Ported anything is going to be better, especially a CJ because its so rough. The Boss manifold is a great offering being close to the CJ but I have not seen one in person so I don't know what they look like inside. A Ported Boss would be a great alternative to the CJ IMHO.These tests drive me crazy... A new stock 2018 manifold looks really good inside with smooth surfaces etc... and a Ported 2018 makes more power..... Then, as we have seen many times, the CJ manifold is a unfinished product with truly terrible gaps and mold lines.. even the ports don't line up well. I think that if you do not sort out the internals of the CJ you better not bother installing it.
That being said, am pretty sure a ported CJ will beat a ported 2018. One look tells you that it will flow way more air if its any way cleaned up inside.
As mentioned before... the CJ should come with a warning... UNFINISHED PRODUCT Some assembly requiered!!
Yup, that's who did mine. I believe that high buck port job is 20 hp but if you consider the $350.00 port job is 13-15 hp that extra 5-7 hp to get you to 20 are pretty expensive. For less than $400 I think I'm sending my CJ off to Air Flow Solutions (Bret Barber) for a professional porting. From what I saw they can also cut/separate the manifold so the entire unit is cleaned up but that race port is a 6 month turnaround and very pricy but he claims up to 20 HP gain
The Boss manifold does look like a production piece inside. Some minor mold lines etc, but nothing horrible. Switching to the CJ does give that car a nice extra kick in the pants. These tests are with "as delivered" manifolds unless otherwise specified. Mine made 447 rwh on the dyno a good day with stock heads, cams, exhaust manifolds and cats on 93 octane. I think you could get to 470 with headers, ported heads and cams. The Boss manifold does look like a production piece inside. Some minor mold lines etc, but nothing horrible. I think it would be difficult to get to 470rwh in N/A form with a gen1 or 2 with the boss setup.. My Boss manifold went to a buddies car that has a 100 shot of Nitrous, boy that thing moves on the straights with about 520rwhp
