Double adjustable shock question

If I have double adjustable shocks, what will be the difference between changing the rebound rate and compression. Currently I have the shocks set in the rear at the softest compression and halfway between full stiff and full soft on rebound rate. I notice currently the with setup that the car takes bumps much better but it also is now more bouncey than when I had it set to middle compression and full soft rebound.
