Good morning,
I'm looking at a used HANS model 20 from 2017. I'm wondering if these need to be recertified and if buying one of these used is a good idea. Seller claims only it has only 3 track days worth of use from it.
What's a fair price for a used one?
Thanks
More information required. A model 20 is the angle of the head rest.
This is my H-3 shown above as HANS III. On the id plate its an H-3 Md 20. 2023 build.
This is my original one from 2007. Its just called a 20M Extra.
Look closely at the SFI sticker and it has a date of manufacture and Recertification. No idea why the 2 identifiers. The later one just manufacture.
Now the biggest difference between the very early model and the later ones, and here is the issue, i don't know when they changed the strap arrangement. The early has 2 straps that are fixed length and rigidly attached to the head component meaning left /right movement is severely restricted.
The later variants use a one piece strap that is free to slide left to right meaning you gain head angle for better side vision. Unfortunately you cant change from one to the other as they also changed the fixing spacing for the tethers. I asked at my motorsport store and we measured, no go.
Make sure its a slide type. The number of times my helmet stopped suddenly whilst trying to turn my head was infuriating. You are so used to that range of motion its hard to stop thinking its still there.
As for your actual question about recertification, i'm going to make an educated guess and say it depends on who you are running with and what level of event it is. Given i have seen so many pictures of guys in short sleeves and shorts on here, we wouldn't get away with that in Australia for any track event at any level, i can't see anyone checking dates on safety equipment.
Now because I'm a nosy bugger and curious about peoples posts i usually go look at their mustang.
I'm just going to throw this out there. You do realize you are going to need a harness as well and something to mount it too which leads to the next rabbit hole. Also a helmet that is compatible with mounting post points for the straps. Its a never ending loop.
Thanks very much for that response. I've requested a couple more pictures of the labels on the device. The only information he posted was the receipt from the company it was purchased from and it says "HANS III Model 20 Large QC ST".
I figured I'd run a Schroth QuickFit Pro with it. The plan is for the car to be used for a few track days a year.
