S550 Roll Cage Info and Pic Repository

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

There’s a bit of cage info and pics spread across this site but would like to pull as much of it (and hopefully more) together to make a solid reference for anyone building or paying to have a cage built.
  • Got pics of gt4 or fo350s cages? Please share!
  • Had a custom cage built please share!
  • Used a pre-bent cage kit please share!
  • Thoughts on cage design please share!
  • Questions ask away!
I’ll start with the pre-bent cage kits I’m aware of.

Trackspec (gt4 design copy):

Cagekits:

I’ve been trying to read as much as I can about cage design and have a few questions:
  • Various sanctioning bodies often don’t permit firewall penetration, rocker sill attachment, or limit base plate/plinth area. Why is this?
  • What do you wish you’d done differently with your cage?
  • Rules permitting, would you build a cage with a larger OD thinner wall or smaller OD thicker wall? E.g. 1.75 x .095 or 1.5 x .120

I was incredibly unhappy with their cage i got. The gaps in the welds were over 1/4’’ and nothing lined up. URW voiced their concern to watson, they told us, “yea we’ve heard of this” then wanted to charge us 20% restocking after admitting fault.

go with something else. @honeybadger got a really nice cage…..

I was just providing another option.

I remember reading your experience on your thread when you were getting it done. It was the reason why I passed on one that someone was selling locally.

I just put in a Trackspec cage in a 2018 and the fit and finish is awesome. Saved me so much time from bending tubing myself and I have a fab shop. My guys said there was no way to do it cheaper than buying the cage from them and it took about a day and a half to fully install and weld. They even accomodated my wanting nascar bars in both doors at no extra charge. All my future mustang cages will come from them.

4 point bolt in roll bar? Watson or CMS.

Full cage?? go with Trackspec or a custom built one if you want something specific (like, taller driver, longer legs, etc).

Sanctioning bodies usually regulate the square footage of mounting plates so that people don't start strengthening the chassis more than allowed. Same goes with tubing OD and thickness, which sometimes just comes down to the supplier that was chosen by the sanctioning body for the first built vehicle (FIA does that for GT3/GT4 cars, which results in a rather heavy cage actually with some quirks). Same goes with the "firewall" thing in FD or some other championships. It's some weird old rule that nobody can explain or justify anymore. For GT cars for example, there's a thing about tubes going to the firewall at the center section of the car, but not going through the firewall itself. But you can always have tubes welded to a plate in the engine bay, and other tubes welded to a similar plate in the cockpit side of things, which is almost the same as running a tube through but doesn't violate that stupid rule...

Terry did a follow-up on that. This has been one of the best cage kits I've seen. Two thumbs up from me.

I realize this is an S550 thread, but for the S197 guys - Trackspec will be developing an S197 cage and bolt-in roll bar using my car in early March. Should be a great addition to their kit options.
