S650 Dark Horse KRM Fuel Pump Review (and one issue)

My primary track is Ozarks International Raceway. One of the features of this course is a long section of constant left turns, from a 180 degree hairpin then into a long sweeping lefthand turn down the front "straight" (which isn't). With my Dark Horse's stock fuel system, by the end of the pit wall when the fuel was around 50% the car would start sputtering. This is annoying for a lot of reasons, so I bought a KRM fuel pump which claims that their pickup will not have this issue, and will make all of the fuel in the tank available.

I've done two track days at Ozarks since the install plus two days at Heartland Park and I can say that it works completely as advertised. HOWEVER I have found one issue, which has nothing to do with the KRM unit itself but has to do with the fuel level indication damping in the Mustang. The fuel pump will absolutely use 100% of the fuel in the tank. But, the fuel level sender is damped pretty heavily, and so what will also happen is that, when you get towards the bottom of the range, the fuel level indicated will not accurately keep up with what is in the tank.

At Heartland Park I ran into this issue where, coming onto the front straight, the engine gave a hiccup with the fuel indicating 11% in track mode. I got off immediately and got back to my RV. When I went to go start the car up to drive to the gas station, it wouldn't start. I put in roughly 1.5-2 gallons, drove to the gas station, and put in 14.6 gallons on a supposed 16 gallon tank.

Last night at Ozarks this caused me issues again. I decided I needed to come in for fuel as I knew I was getting low. In turn 15 (roughly 3/4 of the way through the course) with 13% indicated, it ran out of fuel and was dead. If any of you were there, my sincerest apologies for black flagging the session while they hauled my dumb self off the track. As I was sitting with the car powered on while I threw a couple gallons in so I could load the car back up on the trailer, I saw the fuel level continue to drop, further providing evidence to the heavy damping.

So, lesson learned: 20% = get off the track. Normally this wouldn't have been an issue, but this was a 90 minute session. I'd been going for a bit over an hour total when it happened.

But, as to the issue that the KRM pump sets out to solve of no longer having fuel starvation at half a tank, it does absolutely do that.

Hope this helps someone both to solve the fuel starvation issue, and not get embarrassed on track like I did. Your car (and driving), of course, may have a different number where it says it runs out. My guess is that the 13% at Ozarks vs. 11% at Heartland Park had to do with the fact that Ozarks is much more intensive and constant on having some form of lateral Gs. Or, maybe it's just variability. Either way, 20% is my "get off the track" number.

Have in mind that Mustangs are thirsty animals on track a 2 miles lap is around 0.5 gallons. I think the KPM unit suggest a minimal of 1 gallon when using the pump. So keeping 3 gallons sounds reasonable to me. Much better than the stupid half a tank limit which is like 8 gallons. And you can consider yourself lucky at my local track the fuel cuts starts at 3/4 full because we have a high speed sweeper left Parabolica style corner.
 
My real point was that by the time it was indicating 11-13%, it seemed to actually be 0%. My guess is that 20% indicated probably ends up being less than 3 gallons while on the track from what I saw, although maybe it ends up being accurate (3) at that point.

Either way, from now on, that will be when I'm getting off the track if I haven't gotten off yet for other reasons. This only brought itself up as an issue since this was an extended open track/night session period. With the normal 20-30 minute sessions that I end up seeing at track days, after 2-3 (depending on other factors) I'm at a point where I fill up regardless. Was a good lesson learned.
 
Does the gauge eventually read empty? Could be the float arm is binding as you get low. You might be able to use Engineering Test Mode to check the actual fuel sender values being sent to the PCM/BCM.

Good question, I didn't wait long enough to see if it ever actually went to 0%. I'd had the same thought that the float arm might not be working properly at lower levels. Really where that is more concerning is on street driving, although I tend to be one of those people who fills up at 1/4 tank anyway.
 
Do you have an Australian fuel pump? I think you mean KPM, not KRM.

So the fuel pump cured your issue on left hand turns?

I don't think you are saying that your fuel level reading is related to the fuel pump?

I had nearly the exact same thing happen to me on track in my DH last season. Was on track for last session of the day and fuel was at 11% going into final cooldown lap when about 3/4 of the way thru the track the engine hiccupped before totally cut out. Thankfully I was able to coast thru the remaining few turns which were downhill and get pack to the pits without issue but it was very humbling. once in pits I couldn't restart the car either- totally out of fuel. I put in 3 gallons before finally the car was able to start up and then I could get to the nearest gas station but it was brutal way to learn about the fuel gauge issue - since then I've never let it go below 50% when tracking.

Since you mention you were in a 90 minute session i'm curious if you had any loss of power throughout that long of a session? I usually go on track for 20-minute sessions and even then I can only get maybe 2 to 3 consecutive laps at full pace before the engine starts to pull power noticeably. my last 3 track days were all about 70 degrees F and I would get that same power loss issue anytime I didn't do a couple of cool down laps between pushing it for few laps consecutively.

Do you remember what sort of temperatures you were seeing, CHT and Oil?
 
I think this phenomenon was always present (at least on the S550). There has been a couple times I left the track with my fuel level above 1/4 tank and it decreased to E within about 10 miles and I'm hoping I come upon a gas station before it runs out.

My KPM pump reused the stock level sensor so I don't think that will change.

Yes, the fuel pump cured my issue on left hand turns. And I'm not blaming the pump for the reading, more just that now I have to pay more attention to it to prevent running out of fuel on track. Before it would start to suffer fuel starvation, but as soon as I saw it I just let it catch up and finish my lap. This will now run out of fuel and just be dead.

Not blaming the fuel pump for the issue, just a warning to others.

I had nearly the exact same thing happen to me on track in my DH last season. I had no power loss during the session at all. My car has been doing well, and I think the GTD style hood did help there.
 
I'm running the KPM 800 in my car as well and it solved my fuel starvation issue on left hand turns which I had happen with over 1/4 tank of fuel remaining. I have noticed the gauge is not really reliable when on track, but I've got a pretty good idea of how much my car consumes, so I'm aware of the limit. I'm using around 1 gallon every 3 to 3 1/2 minutes on track. 45 minutes is the max I would run without refueling, but I usually refuel after every session to be safe.

I had no power loss during the session at all. My car has been doing well, and I think the GTD style hood did help there.

Interesting to hear you had no power loss during your sessions. I had my check engine light from recent misfire checked out at Ford Service and they were able to clear the light, and thru their standard diagnostic procedure there were no issues that came up with it that required further servicing. They also told me I was good to start tracking the car again immediately and so I was out at the track shortly after (this past weekend) & during the day I noticed power loss again during the 3rd consecutive lap of pushing the car moderately hard. Once back in pits I checked OBD scanner and it had a 'pending' code for engine bay 2 sensor. I didn't push the car that hard again for rest of the day. No other issues with the car and it was only high 60's F for the day. @krisk have you had any noticeable power loss during sessions?

I have had no power loss except when my differential overheated prior to adding a cooler (mines is a GT, not DH)and the car went into limp mode. I’ve had my car on track for 30-40 minute sessions while temps were in the 90’s. No issues.

I guess you bring your own fuel to the track?

That's surprising. What fuel were you running in the car?
 
Just normal premium pump gas - 92 octane I believe. Good to know that others are not experiencing same power loss on track - I may try taking to a different ford dealer to see if they can better diagnose the cause.
