DOW 23,000+ today?

What happened to all of the enthusiasm after the DOW broke 40k? I mean, ok it set a new high, but these are just numbers like 39k or 41k. There is so much more to look at and pay attention to. And, forgive me, I certainly am no expert.
I guess what I am trying to say is that a new high is just that. There is plenty more to get excited or distressed about depending on those details. It is a rollercoaster that we find exciting or scary from time to time and what we all look for is a smooth steady ride?
Anyway, play it the way you feel best about it. It’s just like whiskey. Drink the one that you like the most. Or the one your buddy pours for you. But we all wish we were drinking Pappy’s.

Yes the market fluctuates....quite a bit at times ...........should I count my hairs that turned gray over the yrs or the ones that fell out?? When the Dow broke 40K, it meant somebody was making money somewhere , obviously not me or Paul M., but it meant the opportunity was there if you played your cards right. Hey either play power ball or play the market.....your odds of winning may be where your luck goes??????????????

Well, so far I’ve done fine. What I was saying was that 40k, other than just a number, was not as important as many other things. None of which by themselves are more important.

Let me use gold as one of the “standards” or marks. In 1920 a man could purchase a pretty good suit with one ounce of gold ( somewhere about $20 ). Today a man can buy a pretty good suit with one ounce of gold ( about $2300 ). So, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

My view is that wise investing takes being able to see many, maybe not so intertwined, factors to be able to see where one’s best chances are to gain the extra dollar that most miss. For instance, for a long term investment, if a man had bought 100k worth of gold in 2000, today he would have 1M in gold. But, would he have any more buying power?

Some play the markets on much shorter time periods, and yes that can be very profitable, but it also requires an additional investment of time. Just like a casino there are all kinds of games to play. And like a casino there are all kinds of games to pay.

My advice has always been, work hard, invest wisely, retire as soon as you can.

Retirement can often be more of an emotional time than even a monetary one, even for those who have planned well over the years. Ceasing work has two simple fronts for many, with one being absolute joy in what they do to being worn out with tough work over the years. I did not retire until I was 68.5 and only because Covid made it difficult for me to continue, but I was lucky as I put funds away in my 401K and other vehicles. Working in the Automotive field, staying close with past customers of performance vehicles , made for a fun day chatting with other Motorheads constantly! For others who also planned well but found their job tedious or tiresome retirement had a different look. The key for both examples is putting funds away, either at work or individually, meant retirement was possible. Sure some are more comfortable than others, but for those youngsters on here, sock away as much as possible and do it as soon as you can, because you may not know what situation you may be in as you near an age where work may cease, be difficult or even in the future, you no longer are in a viable occupation.

Lastly, for those who find health issues making their decision early for them, savings can help keep an unfortunate situation from possibly becoming even worse. Bob was glad he could retire early as it was beneficial for him, I retired later because I had a wonderful job and strong Company support, but regardless of what you are doing now, planning can help you continue, in many cases, to be able to make your own choices later during your existence on this little blue globe.

Bill makes a lot of sense here, but yet the key and main concern when retiring is medical cost protection......I was able to piggy back on Hon's medical ins until I got medicare at 65. Being able to sustain your retirement is your second concern ( what's the use of retiring if you can't afford it?)............Between my pension and SS I am able to enjoy retirement ...............for now!!......adding in Hon and Son for support.........I'm doing great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One thing my paddock queen & I adhere to is budget, budget, budget !!! Live within your budget, I’m still going to need $$$$ when I’m 90 years old……

Dragoon, you are right about being stable within a budget.......my budget plan went out the window with my current medical bills and new bathroom...........I'll get back on track soon, but my budget took a heavy hit........good thing I had a backup reserve............everybody plan yours now before you need it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good extra points and part of why I mention health as the last unknown, it can screw up the balance on either of the common reasons for retirement. Planning early and figuring health concern possibilities is a smart way to have a full plan to enjoy your retirement , regardless of when or why it occurs. Glad you are doing ok , Bob, and my wife and I are doing the same because as dragoon, we live within a budget and that keeps us comfortable and able to do most of the things we want.

Now a tornado was not foreseen, so it did delay my race schedule this year, but I will be back as soon as the house is done, and since I called American Family one hour after the event we may be the first house on our block all done and then ................. asphalt here I come. I have been fortunate, though, as I have been able to run a couple of autocross events with my son, including the Spring Nationals.
