Bringing this over from the Mustang6G Forums, so I can get as much advice as possible!

First thread/post on this forum. Two years ago I bought my second car after saving for a few years. My first was a 1995 Honda Accord EX Coupe I bought at 14 (she sat pampered in my garage until I was old enough to drive her). She developed transmission issues (these Honda models had automatics made of glass) so I sold her and bought my neighbor's 2016 Ford Mustang V6 for a smoking deal. This mustang was babied, washed every other day, and had 16,000 miles on her. Why didn't I get a V8? Insurance in California for a man my age with a mustang already is shocking, even for a V6. I will take the (now 90ish or so) horsepower hit and enjoy my lighter V6...I crave the V8 but love my girl too much even after driving a few. The previous owner (bless his soul) passed away a month before I bought the mustang, and his wife's nickname for the car was...you guessed it...Cobalt Filly. License plate coming soon in their honor.

Needless to say...I developed car fever after a year of mustang ownership. I started with simple things (having learned the basics on my Honda...and youtube off course). A nice tint and the front windshield replaced with aftermarket (had 2 large rock chips, and I gained blue visor tint). The custom exhaust was next: resonator replaced with an x-pipe and Spintech mufflers for a little throat. Shoutout Norcal Muffler for making a V6 sound decent. JBA Shorty Headers (really woke her up more! much deeper tone) went in next, with custom quad tips and a GT350 style valence (a cheapo off American Muscle, quality and fitment was OEM amazing! way better than I expected, still holds up after a half year-ish with no fading or other problems).

A little RTR grille and Cyclone badging later and I felt she looked a bit more respectable. Now we were getting somewhere. Then I decided that some suspension was in order (thank you @tj@steeda for your help and your suspension boys for their advice). Installed the following more or less in order:
Non-Adjustable Shocks and Struts
Sport Progressive Lowering Springs (1.74" drop for my girl)
New (cut) Jounce Bumpers
Camber Plates
AMR Tuning using SCT
Note - since Cobalt is my daily driver, I wanted something that would be comfortable for my older parents and yet aggressive enough in the corners for spirited driving (now tracking heh...) and this setup is AMAZING at everything. I may try some other springs or some AJ Hartman Coilover Conversion kit...but for now my goodness this is a great setup.

This year I did the unthinkable and asked "what is autocross?" And now I am addicted to the SCCA, autocross, and track days. Ran my first autocross on the stock 17s and Michis and loved every second. I was only 2 seconds slower than all the big boys in CAMC...but who cares it was freaking fantastic fun!
img_1001-jpeg.jpg

img_1016-jpeg.jpg

The addiction led me to “livery” work and my next crazy mod...Look at them MEATS. 19x11 square setup using APR studs, 25mm spacers, and 295/35/ZR19s...delicious.
img_1671-jpeg.jpg

At this point I swapped my tuning from AMR to MPT due to idling issues. Glad I did because the trans tuning is godly. She feels peppy and she found some power in there somewhere (I keep checking the engine bay...am I missing 2 cylinders or something?) Added front and rear tow hooks in preparation for a track day...

Track day!!!

And in preparation for my second track day next week...upgraded to PP1 Brembo brakes to prevent glazing and burning of the 2-pot pads. I can probably stop time with these big boys.

Hey, you made it to TMO - congrats! Immensely more info here than on M6G.

Check out @Scootsmcgreggor 's page when you get a chance. He has a V6 (or maybe it was the 4 cyl 🤔 ) that he swapped a 5.0 into. In case you ever wanted to go down that rabbit hole.
Thank you so much! I will be going that route if I blow up this engine. (Perhaps procharger though...) It is also my daily driver ha...
Any suggestions for ANYTHING you see or know is appreciated as I progress! Thanks!

(Or if you have leftover/used/unwanted parts...)

Only advice I have is to focus on seat time rather than parts. I know not everyone shares this mentality, but I'd hate to have a tricked out car with all the go-fast parts and someone with a mildly modified street car with less power passes me up.

Blayze Coaching is great for video review from pro drivers. They'll give you turn-by-turn instruction on how to improve.
TrackAddicts app is a great (free) app to record your laps and basic telemetry.
Garmin Catalyst is a popular device for recording laps and has mild coaching input built in.
Aim Solo DL is another popular data recorder.

Essentially, you want some way of recording lap video and data so you can review it later to see where you can improve.

Awesome! Yes getting lots of seat time in over this year. Running the TrackAddicts Pro app on my RAM mount on the windshield for good video until I get a rollbar and go pro later on.

100% agree with Ewheels, Seat time means much more than trying to go faster right now. Get your bearings right with what you have under you right now and then you can improve on that with mods.First things first is a credo to live by..................................
Roger! Currently got the girl at a good starting place with RUBBER, big brakes (PP1, like the V6 should have been optioned with from factory) and suspension.

Getting lots of seat time in this year! (Varying it between autocross and track so I can get more.)

Agreed with Ewheels. The only mods you should be focused on are cooling mods that keep you on track for the full session and mods that make the car stable enough to learn from. Being out there on worn out suspension parts or 500 treadwear tires (or even mismatched tires god forbid) can make it really hard to actually learn anything.

Once you've developed your skills behind the wheel you can begin to go down the rabbit hole of identifying and modifying the shortcomings of the car to better suit your goals. Not calling you out by any means, but just re-iterating this for anyone new to trackdays/competitive driving.

Keep up the good work so far. You're on the right track.

You should look at going to 305/30's next time you get tires. You should be able to do that with what you're currently running for spacers, studs, etc. 10mm more rubber on the road and less sidewall is well worth it.
Yessir will do! Planning for next set to be 4PS Michis as well, 305/30s. Once I get a set of 18x11s I will run 305/30 Hoosiers or ECFs or Yokos.

Thanks Mav! Always appreciate your advice and been following it (and succeeding! haha).

Will do. O7 Hope you don't mind if when I do need advice I can ask you?

Don't waste your money on another set of PS4S. They are a great street tire but far from a decent track tire.....and over priced.
305 ECF's are fantastic learner tires. Last forever and consistent the entire time.

Noted. ECF's in 1-2 years.
Do ECF's Extreme Contacts 200TW come in 305/30/19? I thought they were only 295 or 315?

You're right, I think it's only 295/315.
The 10mm difference is negligible. Unless you're competing for regional/national title, you won't even notice the difference. Hell, I've seen a guy on 285's demolish a crowd of folks (including myself) on 305's. He's a much better driver though.

In the professional realm, any slight advantage matters. For us mere mortals, the guy with more experience or better tire compound will always win.

PS: you mentioned Hoosiers in the future. I don't know how fat your wallet may or may not be, but be prepared to spend $2,000 a weekend. They're extremely fast but they're essentially used up in a day or two. Hence why so many of us stick to the 200tw offerings.

need to focus on transmission and engine cooling. Home from track day and Head temps reached 223* with trans temp reaching 252*...
