Current progress on the Setrab 960 install. Massive kudos to @GAR944 for the help with the shroud design and CAD files. Almost done and ready for first start to check for leaks. This is my first major project with fabrication involved. Been super fun and learning a lot!

Another ambitious project earlier this year especially for a one car garage - cortex RLCA (their core exchange program is awesome) and Kelltrac diff bushings. What a difference, my diff bushings were fully shot and the rear end felt unpredictable at times - who would have thought 130lbs of cast iron moving 3/4” left right up and down would impact handling 😅

Finished the oil cooler install today! Need to put it all back together and figure out some more ducting for the radiator.

First start was a success! No leaks and we have oil pressure!
 
First time at Laguna Seca last weekend. What a frigging track. Honestly true bucket list box checked for me. Had an amazing day. Focused on learning the line and track and progressed well through the day. Temps were great 225F real coolant, 230F oil and 240F cylinder head temp max. Hopefully last piece is hood vents to drop the CHT’s.

Well, I had been struggling with high CHT for several years now, even after a lot of cooling mods (CSF radiator, GT500 water pump, distilled water + WaterWetter, RaceLouvers RT hood, many vacuum bleeds). I believe I finally found the root cause.

I was always suspicious I had an issue with the cats based on the smell from the exhaust. I went up a hill here in 3rd gear at 70 MPH with a decent amount of throttle and the CHT climbed to 224°F and water temps to about 214°F really quickly. On the way down, I did a full decel with no gas and the temps took a very, very long time to drop. On track, the temps with all the mods were okay but still not the best; I could still hit 240°F CHT on Thunderhill West in February. (Oil temps are great with the oil cooler, though).

It seemed like the heat in the engine was just not getting out quickly. I did an exhaust backpressure test in front of the cats and lo and behold, I found the bottleneck:
  • Idle Backpressure: Driver side was ~1.25 PSI | Passenger was 0.5 PSI
  • 2500 RPM Backpressure: Driver side climbed to 2-2.5 PSI | Passenger stayed flat at 0.5 PSI
Next, I checked temps on the front and rear of the cats after a brief warm-up and revs:
  • Driver Side (Clogged): 160°C Front / 100°C Rear
  • Passenger Side (Healthy): 60°C Front / 90°C Rear
I borescoped the driver side cat and, sure enough, the entire center of the honeycomb was melted and black. The crazy part? No CEL and fuel trims seemed fine. Photos attached of the driver side cat.

I really think this was the battle I had been fighting for cooling for years. Now I'm excited to see A) how much power I was missing out on, and B) how much better it cools on track with all the mods I had done once fresh cats are installed.
