Engine cooling questions

Automatic transmission cooling is critical to engine cooling. You're pouring a ton of heat into the radiator with the factory transmission cooler that's located in the radiator.
I always thought that was a retarded place for the transmission cooler, but I am not an engineer. The setup in that post #19 photograph appears to be much better.
 
I personally never encountered any engine heating issues. Only the engine oil temperature was getting high . But never overheated.
I did though replace the engine for other issues. Now I will be installing an oil cooler and see how that goes.
I also keep an eye on the tranny...likes to stay at higher temperatures as well but it also depends on the way I'm shifting (A10).

Which oil coolers are you considering?

You are not considering a transmission fluid cooler?

Most transmission coolers are located in the cold side of the radiator so all heat removed is being fed right into the water pump. GM used to have a chart that showed life expectancy based on transmission temps, overheated transmissions have a short life. My main experience was plow trucks with Allison transmissions, the ones that did crossover clean up and intersection clean up needed an additional aux cooler added.

"All heat" is still a couple of hundred degrees, right?

I always thought the cooler would be better outside of the radiator.

Independent cooling has its issues too, you need to get the transmission warmed and a fan on the cooler. If you sit stationary or drive at very low speed (parade) the transmission can overheat. I kind of like Blacksheep's idea of running an independent pump feeding a separate cooler with a fan on it.
