I missed this. do you know what caused it?
Yup. I was running the electric water pump with the engine off to purge the system and the phone rang….i got distracted and ran the battery down. So I jump started it and let the alternator charge it back up but the rapid discharge followed by rapid re charge over heated the battery and poof.

Ahhh. Was that one of the non-HD/re-start battery? I had an issue with my first one because it discharged to like 3v and ballooned the case. The newer ones cut off output at a safe limit 10.x IIRC) to prevent this exact thing.

Here is my spare:

100A alternator meets 12A max charge rate battery and smoke show.
I got accused of this yesterday, "did you not read the instructions like a guy".
At least you got video of it to show the rest of us "guys" who don't read instructions either.

You assume I can read.....oh wait.....

Ahh. Okay. So this is a motorcycle battery and doesn’t have good battery management system. Basically, I was told they can’t protect themselves from overcharging or over discharging. I did the same thing. Fortunately mine didn’t catch fire.

The ATX-20HD or 30d are the safe ones

I was told by the manufacturer the ATX-20HD is specifically incompatible with the late S197 (11-14) charging system, just as a note for those looking. They didn't mention the 30HD, but mentioned the capacity is an issue with the charging system and the 20HD.

Snakes on the Lake?
Wait...maybe they both were. LOL.
The second video I made on my computer way back when, the first one is a slide show my phone just made from google photos and sent me.
Probably the same event. (Spoiler alert, the second video was my big "Go Pro" debut so its a little more interesting.)
