I have not been around fork trucks for a couple of decades. They used to be manuals, but then in those days a lot more cars had manuals as well. Too bad.

Most forklifts are automatic with a “Clutch”. When you push down on the brake the trans disengages before the brake engages. Yes, you can go backwards on a hill by pushing down on the brake pedal. This also allows you to push down on the gas while stopped to accelerate the speed of the mast without fear of moving the truck.
