Great lap, looks like a fantastic track, and a great day

Thanks for posting -- headed there for Labor day, for the first time. Now I have a good idea of the line!

You'll love it - by far my favorite track. Even if it eats my brake pads :)

I will be there on Labor Day with Chin as well. Spent Monday and Tuesday with Derek, Pete in CT and 2012-Boss as well. Can't get enough of the Glen! My best for the two days was a 2:23.81 which while a PB was a bit disappointing. Was in the intermediate run group and had an instructor for the first day that I think was afraid of the car so I had to practice smooth line training for 4 sessions. 2nd day got solo sign off but was balked in traffic multiple laps where we were - 3.00 or more off of all time best lap.
Eh.. excuses are like you know what.

Derek did an awesome job on street tires with that lap, very aggressive 8), if I did that my Instructor would have had a heart attack! Prost!

Watkins Glen 2:23.81 Baus 302, Toyo R888s and the same old mods.

How did you like the R888's?

Steve - sorry I barely got to chat with you over the 2 days... I had my friend Kat there for her first time ever on a track and ended up quite busy between "coaching" her and tending to my brakes. Oh and driving here and there ;) Your car sounded so quiet this year - guessing you're running different exhaust? I recall the SCREAMING mustang from WG Aug 2013.... inspirational

Your 2.23.81 is about 0.1 seconds faster than my 2013 time - not bad at all. Too bad you had traffic... I was in the 2.20-2.22 range for the majority of my "clean" laps, but went into my last session (Tues morning) with the intent of banging out one super fast lap. I ALMOST had traffic at the end, but thankfully those Miata's take turns really fast and I didn't catch him till the main straight.

I have to say, my jaw nearly dropped when I saw the 2.17 lap, but it also felt really really good to know that was the one lap I purposely pushed extra hard on every single corner to try to be aggressive. Guess I must have picked up something over the years ;)

You going to Thomspon with NEQ in Sept?

Great job for first day at The Glen. Comes to my house and kicks my butt!! We are having so much fun I signed up for the second day! BB will be in the 15s before the day is done.

Ran Watkins Glen for the first time today. Best lap 2:17.57 following Steve's line:

Just a thought, try short shifting up to fifth coming out of turn one, then once you are making the turn into two, hold the throttle to the floor all the way to the bus stop. You should be reaching 140ish by the time you have to brake for the bus stop. When doing this approach, turn three can be a little exciting! Also, when making the first turn into the bus stop, try getting your right wheel all the way on the right side of the curbing and your left wheel will be where the curbing starts (but still on the track surface). This gives you a straight shot for the next turn to the left in the bus stop. Hopefully the rain stays away for you today!

Nice - I played my 2.17 lap side by side with yours to see how lines compare. From the chute on you were slightly quicker around the corners it looked - nice driving.

Fun track though huh? The esses are awesome.

i really wish I had 3.55's at the Glen with my car. I bump the rev limiter at 6800 RPM a couple times, and on slicks next year I'll be on the limiter half way down the back straight in 5th. Wish that track was closer to my house...

Anyways, nice driving, fun watching another 2.17 lap!

Agree with all these tips - I grab 5th right before turn 2 and I'm braking from 142-143 depending on how brave I'm feeling going up the esses. I find the transition from turn 3 to 4 is kinda hairy doing this when really hammering it, but the car always sticks and just goes. Just nice and smooth with the wheel. That wall approaching at 130 does get my nerves a bit!!

Agree on nailing the first curbing in the bus stop too. Makes that series exciting too :)

I agree totally with Mike about 5th just before entering Turn 2, just keeps the car accelerating more smoothly instead of having it wound up in 4th with all that HP and Torque to manage while the car is transitioning right then left. Then you have to upshift while making the exit onto the straight. Anyway Nick and I had a grand time again today weather held out right till the end. I managed a 2:20.44 on the last lap of the last session, once again I had a final lap going where I was 1.5 seconds up on my best and the checkers came out at the sole of the boot. Video to be up shortly for official confirmation.

Verdict on Toyo R888s is don't bother, inconsistent all weekend, 40 psi hot is the best I could find but one session I was no better than a 2:25 and then at the end I strung together 6 2:21's and 2 2:20's. I really think I would have done just as well on Michelin PSS's. Hoosiers may find their way to my door at some point.

I really liked the PSS when I used them at Las Vegas. I'm not sure if they are any faster than the RS3 but they were more predictable and felt more balanced. They are a lot better than the stock P-0 and Toyo ProxesOne. I'm probably going to try the new Yokohama AD08R if I ever wear out my PSS tires as I don't drive my car in the rain. Plus it doesn't rain here anymore. :p
