This is how it was done back in the day. You had to use a rope to fold the rubber gasket over the lip while someone pushed on it. You don't just throw it in the hole like now days.

Volvo cab over trucks were like that, one outside and one on the inside pulling the rope, hope you didn't drop it or crack it.
Actually our biggest windshield problem was shipping, when a delivery arrived the windshields were inspected before we would sign off on the delivery. 50% damaged was not unusual.
When I moved to fleet operations all glass work was done by vendors.
