HPDE tires

Tire Rack shows only small sizes available (255/30R19 is the largest), but maybe that is what you need for a rain tire, a smaller tire contact patch, maybe mounted on a smaller wheel? I have never been on a track in the rain, so I have no idea what I am talking about. A separate set of wheels and tires for rain seems like a lot for HPDE.
It might seem like a lot but when you have a track day that is non refundable it lets you get out and learn driving skills inthe wet. I'd check back or search around for them. I run 295F/305R in the rain.

Rain is a very judgement based thing. Practice is needed if testing for a race or other competition for sure. But risk reward has to be factored in. Some tracks are pretty decent in wet or damp conditions. Some are treacherous. Mid Ohio even post repave is very tricky, Watkins is decent. The unforgiving off tracks in the dry become more so in the wet. Road Atlanta esses and Turn 12 come to mind for me. I may start a thread to discuss outside of this one.

Turn 12 scares me in the dry, but I am new.

My avatar is just after the esses and starting up turn 5.

Racing in the rain is a scary thought for me, but this car is my daily driver, and the nicest, most expensive car I have ever owned, so . . .

Having tracked/autocrossed Spec Miatas, Vipers, various Mustangs, Cayman GTS and a boatload of other vehicles (Hondas, Mazdas, etc. ) I can honestly say the simple modifier on tires is simply , Wider is better!" Sure it is a blanket statement but on virtually every car, with varying weights obviously, a wider tire not only helped with g forces it gave me better tire wear. It was more apparent with the heavier cars, but it carries across the board. The Mustang which comes with tiny rubber from the factory is such an easy example and it is so obvious wider rubber is key especially when going to events with other Mustang drivers. The Fast Ford and Mustang Roundup, which sees anywhere from 30 to 60 track rats every year in Hastings is just one example as over the past 15 years of the event drivers saw constantly that wider wheels , wider tires was the key to winning awards because across the board it was apparent the fastest drivers were on more rubber. Observation is key to figuring out what seems to work the best, reading the articles from solid sources, but also simply noting what the very fastest drivers are using.

In the words of Blacksheep 1, the TMO Guru of racing tires and bad backs, he will repeat over and over that the tires that come on Mustangs are simply too tiny, not the most efficacious and that the best tires for wear, speed , and control are always those with a bigger footprint on the ground. Considering he spent a few centuries changing tires on Professional and winning Amateur Race Teams take his simple advice. Also if you have an S197 please don't ask him what he thinks of a Watts Link set-up ------- he don't be liking them, ha!

The 295/35/19 Yokohama A052 tire is the only track tire that I actually bought twice for 7 seasons with the car. My drive is 124 to 370 miles depending on which track I go to I got 130 laps (240 track miles) out of the last set as well as an 1200 miles road trip last summer outside of track days. Overall I like it because it's relatively quiet and soft sidewall tire for the road but has an insane amount of grip no matter the situation and it's even good on wet. Overall I value the road comfort more than track performance however the tire is really fast on track as well. So there is a tire that can do it all.

130 laps - how many HPDE days, if you can answer?

Also, since it sounds like you drive to the track, what sort of alignment settings do you use?

Feel free to read through my build thread for what I'm doing with the car.

My tracks are around 3 km per lap so 130 laps = 390 km or 242 miles of track driving.
Since I run 19x11 wheels I need maximum camber upfront to be able to tuck the wheel in the fender aka -3.2 front or so. I run around -1.5 rear and I like running some toe-out front -0.25 total and toe-in rear at 0.25.
I'm currently the Fastest Mustang on my local tracks in the Balkans but there are not a lot of Mustangs running on tracks here.
Hope this helps.

You should take a look at the Vitour P1 tire. People are setting some very good laps with them. One fellow I know with a 800hp M3 could not get his usual Hoosier R7s in time so he went to a track day with the Vitour P1 and set a personal best. I was a little surprised since we supply him with the Hoosiers normally.
Just to put this into context.... Since Chinese made tires arrive here pretty much tariff free. It costs me about US$1250 for a set of P1's in 315/30-18. vs a US$ 2800 for set of R7's. Would perfer the Hoosiers any day. But then again, I would prefer to be taller and less bald as well.

Thanks for the recommendation for a good read. I have started reading that thread.

I don't see an option for that size from Tire Rack, but for 315/30R19.

$2968 Hoosier R7

$1996 for Vitour TEMPESTA P1 P-01R in 315/30R18.

$3056 for the new Hoosier R8 in 315/30R19, but you can back that price down to $2596 if you use the 295/30R19, which have a tread width of 10.9" and would probably work better with 19 x 11" wheels in my Dark Horse wheel wells, anyway.

I’ll use the stock wheels for now i bought a set of forged ones with some rain/street tires so i can have 2 sets. Might go to an 11 up front with 315’s all around rotatable would be a good set imo following then”bigger is better” mantra

I'm looking for anyone's experience with 200 UTQG treadwear or less.
My original plan was to drive 200 UTQG tires to the track, which I did with the 888's. I bought the BC Forged wheels used with new Proxy R888R's and ran them out, 5 track days, qty. 20 - 20 to 30 min sessions depending on the host club. A track-day neighbor with the same Mustang as me suggested the Proxy RR's as a sticky cost- effective option. So, I packed them in the car and drove them to the track after the 888"s were used up. ( a bunch of extra work) .
I have 10 years of HPDE experience and generally run in the advances group.
Here's my tire experience so far; 888's were OK, very loud on the street! Usually good for 5 or 6 laps, then get greasy the last few laps of a 20 -25 min session.
I haven't run the NT01's on my S550 yet but ran them on my C5; (slightly) less noise on the street, very consistent over a 20 to 25 min session, 20 to 22 heat cycles. Problem is they used to be very "cost effective" but the NT01 price has increased substantially compared to other options.
The Proxy RR's have been really good, , a bunch of fun to run. consistent through the full session. Late in the day they get a little greasy the last lap or 2 but don't loose too much. Only down side is I cant drive them to the track. Price is GREAT!
I'm not looking for a "hero lap" tire like the time attack guys, consistency over a 20 to 25 min session is key feature for me.
I can run either rim for track, the BC's or stock PP2 rims. I can run 305 square on the factory rims I can run 295 square on the BC Forged or 295/305. BC forged are MUCH lighter. ( 19 lbs vs 32 lbs)

My 2026 season will start with the Proxy RR's as there is at least 1 more weekend in them, Hoping for more than that.
Below are my options in 2 groups 200 UTQG and 100 and below.
Over $2K for a set of tires is not in my budget but I left them in the matrix anyway.
Let me know which tire you'd try next and why.
200 treadware and above I'd drive to the track. I drove to the track on the NT01's which I believe is still doable.
When I went to -2.3 camber in front I was expecting serious tire ware but kept toe at Zero and it seems OK, I drove 8 hours to NCM on the Michelin sport 4S and did not see any deleterious effects, surprisingly!

🤔

The host of this thread, bossdog, seems to have disappeared on us last December.

We should probably try to keep this chart updated for others as a reference and maybe expand the sizes from 295 and 305 to include 315.

There. I added the Trofeo Track, second tire from bottom, but I could not figure out how to add a cell for 315. They do not have a 295. 305 is probably the best size for our cars, anyway, as Tire Rack says it has a 10.9" tread width mounted on an 11" wheel.

Things are getting slippery in the mojave…..

I think i am going to make it on my factory tires…..

Other mustangers suggest toyo RR as long lasting value in the heavy cars

Has anybody here run these? What do you think of them? How did they perform? How long did they last? They are one of the cheaper tires bossdog listed.
