Hey guys. Autocrossing my 2019 GT in April. Currently i have on Falken Azenis fk460 a/s tires. stock tire sizes 245/275. I really don't want to destroy my all-seasons. I'd rather buy a set of summer tires and when it starts to get cold again throw the all-seasons back on. I'm looking for a tire that can do a HPDE or Autocross but mostly be driven around on the street. Don't want or need the best of the best performance tire. Best bang for buck for my tire size and class, i definelty would prefer a better "feeling" tire than one that just gives me the most time. Being predicable at its limit is a plus. I've looked at Potenza Sports as i heard their steering response is great, but maybe that's too much tire? Michelins too but they're pricey. any recommendations would be appreciated.
 
It's kind of an extremely wide request. Assuming stock rims and stock suspension you are really looking for a tyre with the largest tread blocks or continuous outer edge. This is purely to try keep the tyre from tearing chunks from leading edges. Its going to understeer no matter what as it stands. A better feeling tyre i don't believe you will really find while the car is in its current form. Potentially a more aggressive wheel alignment may help with steering response. After doing some front end work and drastically changing the toe on the front end the feeling was totally dead and lethargic in response. Once aligned again back to my preferred toe out setting the steering was back to instant response again. Anything with traditional road style tread blocks is going to walk earlier and give you warning as long as you dont leap over its limits. Anything more track oriented is going to be destroyed by a stock setup and not give you value. Find a good value tyre for you that looks as far from a winter tyre as possible and enjoy the learning experience for what it is.

As @bnight mentioned, the PS4S is what was stock fitment for cars here in Australia. I've run them up to 180kph (112mph) in the wet, way more than my comp Nankang CRS could cope with on the day, 140kph (87mph) and skating. Many people run them for track days as they are taking out their road cars and having fun and not melting them.

Bit more difficult when you are looking for staggered sizes in the same tyre. Its kind of throw a dart at this level. Don't overthink it at this stage.

As @bnight mentioned, the PS4S is what was stock fitment for cars here in Australia. There is a BMW version of the (PS4s) that is standard on G8x M cars and that tire is showing some amazing track capabilities and honestly if you can get your hands on them it's the perfect tire.
 
Sorry to veer completely different here but sine the OP is talking Autocrossing the 4S should not even be considered as it is not competitive for this venue when compared to the top choices. I would steer towards the following tires if running through the cones is your main focus:

1. Bridgestone RE-71RZ
2. Yokohama A-052
3. Nankang CR-S V2
4. Vitour Tempesta P1
5. Falken RT660+

I imagine you are likely running with your local SCCA Region and feel free to chat with some of the folks in your Class, but there are only a few tires out there that really rock through the cones. The Yokes are fast but of the above listed they are likely the fastest wearing, but looking at Michelin rubber is not the direction I would consider ( high TWR and they do not heat up fast ). Michelin owned BFG has the Rival 1.5S that would give you better wear and it is the closest tire Bibendum has for a pretty decent autocross tire - yet it is no longer in the top tier of competitive rubber.

Ahh @Bill Pemberton your competitive nature shines through, love it. From the limited information it appears to me he is looking for a stock size replacement on a car that has no setup from what i can gather from his profile todate.

Whilst i totally agree with your suggestions for a competitive car, i don't believe he is at that stage of diving down the rabbit hole of track preparedness. If he hangs around all of us long enough then it can definitely be on the cards.
 
I currently run PS4 on my 08 Bullitt and RT660 on my Roush. If you want a true street tire, the PS4 is hard to beat. Back when I was getting used to my Roush I ran against someone that had 200TW tires on his car on day one of a 2 day event and PS4s on the second day due to a flat tire. He beat me by a little over a second on day one and about half a second on day two. I found out later that he had placed at nationals in another class, so he was a good driver. A 200TW tire is definitely faster, but I've been pretty impressed with the PS4s, too. I was able to get 2nd in my class (out of 27 cars) at the Rocky Mountain Mustang Roundup in '24 with them, even though 200TW tires were allowed in my class. I know 3rd place had 200TW tires on his car. I'll use Bill's list for my next set of dedicated autocross tires. I'll probably try to run my current tires (both cars) another year, even though they've slowed down quite a bit.

My suggestion was based purely on the request for a real street tire that can do it all. My BMW friends report that the BMW OEM PS4s version on our tracks matches used Slick tires on pace and a friend of mine who happen to just bought a new G87 M2 reported that his PS4s's are matching the Nankang CRS v2 on pace. This PS4s are 19 and similar sizes to a Mustang so I guess they can fit if someone can find them from a BMW dealer.
 
Knowing that tire compounding can be different for the same tire around the World I will only say that the PS4 will not keep up with any of the new, hot 200 TWR rubber , especially on an autocross course. It is a great tire , but decades old and in fact the Continental Sport 02 is a superior tire to it currently with neither being in a conversation for running between the cones. Both are decent high treadwear rubber for HPDEs, but they will not keep up with quite a number of tires in the US. Running Time Trials in the States I can honestly say I don't know a single person running on PS4s and this comment comes from an individual who is not biased against Michelin -- won a National Championship on them years back. All this said, as noted, compounding can be different on tires sold in Europe over Asia or the US, etc. as different parts of the whole have slightly different demands.

Lastly, having actually run some vehicles on the PS4 years past at a test facility, I don't push the PS4 since with standard alignments it has a tendency to eat the outside edge in an autocross format.

ok so I'm reading the comments. yes the car is bone stock. I plan to upgrade suspension eventually but probably next year. I originally wanted to buy wider rims and do 305 all around, but I didn't wanna spend the money on rims right now. 90% the car is driven around town on weekends. I do not care to chase times or be competitive. i know most of my pace will come from me improving as a driver. it seems like the PS4S would be ideal. once i go to a wider squared setup yes I'll look into some more serious competitive 200tw tires. I'm still having to get used to the car. I came for a 2015 130hp Elantra. I do plenty of competitive sim racing and some irl track days with skip barber but I'm aware its gonna take me a second to really understand this cars ability and limit. I only got it in November and haven't hooned it yet. If there's something like a PS4S but not as pricey, better bang for buck id be interested. If PS4S is truly that good for what it is than sure I'll get that.

The other more track focused / durable option might be the Yokohama AD09 or Nankang CRS v2 both tires should be reasonable on the street and good on Autocross and probably cheaper than PS4s. But the place where PS4s shine for me is it's a real street tire and it's great on the street with reasonable performance for a novice driver.
