HANS question

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

Good morning,
I'm looking at a used HANS model 20 from 2017. I'm wondering if these need to be recertified and if buying one of these used is a good idea. Seller claims only it has only 3 track days worth of use from it.
What's a fair price for a used one?
Thanks

More information required. A model 20 is the angle of the head rest.

This is my H-3 shown above as HANS III. On the id plate its an H-3 Md 20. 2023 build.

This is my original one from 2007. Its just called a 20M Extra.

Look closely at the SFI sticker and it has a date of manufacture and Recertification. No idea why the 2 identifiers. The later one just manufacture.

Now the biggest difference between the very early model and the later ones, and here is the issue, i don't know when they changed the strap arrangement. The early has 2 straps that are fixed length and rigidly attached to the head component meaning left /right movement is severely restricted.
The later variants use a one piece strap that is free to slide left to right meaning you gain head angle for better side vision. Unfortunately you cant change from one to the other as they also changed the fixing spacing for the tethers. I asked at my motorsport store and we measured, no go.

Make sure its a slide type. The number of times my helmet stopped suddenly whilst trying to turn my head was infuriating. You are so used to that range of motion its hard to stop thinking its still there.
As for your actual question about recertification, i'm going to make an educated guess and say it depends on who you are running with and what level of event it is. Given i have seen so many pictures of guys in short sleeves and shorts on here, we wouldn't get away with that in Australia for any track event at any level, i can't see anyone checking dates on safety equipment.
Now because I'm a nosy bugger and curious about peoples posts i usually go look at their mustang.
I'm just going to throw this out there. You do realize you are going to need a harness as well and something to mount it too which leads to the next rabbit hole. Also a helmet that is compatible with mounting post points for the straps. Its a never ending loop.

Thanks very much for that response. I've requested a couple more pictures of the labels on the device. The only information he posted was the receipt from the company it was purchased from and it says "HANS III Model 20 Large QC ST".
I figured I'd run a Schroth QuickFit Pro with it. The plan is for the car to be used for a few track days a year.

Ok so its the same as my second Hans from 2023.
They are a molded plastic frame, not the much more expensive carbon fiber version Sliding tethers it is.

Just a heads up about the quick fit harness. See the first post about them being dropped.
Start looking for one in stock by the sounds of it. Believe there are 2 versions because of the change of buckles on the 18 & up models

I was going to chime in but the other guys have fully covered the topic. There are basically 2 types currently made, the cheaper plastic one and the carbon one, both have cert dates. If you run HPDE, it's pretty much anything goes, as stated above, but every actual race organization that I know of requires a current cert date. When you install that harness, make sure the shoulder straps are routed in a way that they won't come off, there are very specific ways that the belt is controlled by the holes in the seat, and usually another bracket behind the seat.

I run the schroth 4 point harness in my s197 with schroth’s dedicated HANS device. The neck restraint is designed to route and fit the 4 point straps exactly. Be careful that whatever you get works with the width of the schroth harnesses. I think they are narrower.

Any safety device you can get will help ...........Just think of Dale Ernhadt who thought an open faced race helmet was all that He needed.................That Feb 2001 still haunts me today......

I'm trying to decide if this is a deal or not. I have no problem waiting and purchasing a brand new one that will work specifically with the harness I go with.
The seller sent me these two pictures, plus the information I mentioned(HANS III Model 20 Large QC ST)that came off a picture of the receipt.
I guess I just figured if this local deal was in fact a good deal maybe it would be worth scooping up. If it is, what's a fair price? He won't set a number to it, he want me to make an offer.
Thanks for the help here guys!

A photo against open face helmets. Happened back in 2010 in my S2000 passing a guy that was pulling over to the side of the track. Lots of blood and ten stitches later a lesson on why to wear a full face. I was also using a roll bar ,5 point and Hans.

And here I was getting pissy about being hit with rubber and a few stones through open windows. Always let the track crew know about any debris on track. I also push if you have the gear, wear all the gear.
