Tying Your S550 Down In The Trailer

I'm thinking of getting this car hauler or one like it.

I was a tow truck driver 30yrs ago, I've hauled a zillion motorcycles and I've had a few cars in enclosed trailers. But I have never used a flat bed like this before. My question is, how do you tie it down? I can think of 50 different ways. But nothing I'm feeling warm and fuzzy about. Unlike an enclosed the anchor points aren't on the floor so you're going to have a hell of an angle on the straps trying to tie into the D slots in the wheel wells without getting into the bodywork. I'm thinking maybe soft ties wrapped around something front and rear. I haven't looked hard up front but I imagine the K member has a bunch of places you could use. The rear on the other hand is all suspension arms, half shafts and no axle.

Are any of you using a flat bed like this? How are you securing your car.

Thanks!

It is kinda difficult with a big wheel setup. Also started going through the wheel. Just be real careful with pulling angles.
The Ford tie down points attached are also an option.

I have been using these straps through my wheels.

It's been working well, but I've got a 16 foot trailer and I have very little room to get the ratchet straps between the trailer and the wheels. A longer trailer would help this. Also, my wheels are 9.5" wide and the 38" straps are almost to short. If you have wider wheels I would look for 48" straps.

I would also be very careful about the height of the deck of a 7k trailer. My car is lowered but I don't have any aero stuff and it's a pain to load. I have a lot of 2x's stacked up to get the angle low enough to not drag the nose or the exhaust. I would look for the lowest deck height, longest dove tail, and long ramps.

I had a similar trailer as the wood deck one above. My car is lowered and I had to build ramps and extensions to make it work. Was a pain in the rear loading and unloading.

Moved to a roll back style trailer and installed e-track. See photo. Trailer deck rolls back and allows the car to be loaded. Then rolls back forward and latches in. https://tfttrailers.com/

When the golf cart is not loaded in front of the car I have to strap under the car to the d-rings on the trailer. Otherwise I do not have enough tongue weight. I use https://www.steeda.com/steeda-555-5202-s550-mustang-trailer-tie-down-kit
that is mounted under the front to tie to.

I use a similar through-wheel setup for the tie downs. 94" ramps plus boards at the end and sticking a jack under the rear of the trailer so it doesn't squat and take the splitter off is a little bit of a faff. Getting a winch plate mounted to the tongue/frame later this week so it should make it a little easier.

You can install anchor points anywhere you want on this trailer.

But - how one of the previous responders mentioned - Ford Performance Tie Down Kit is a perfect solution for tying the car down with point on a chassis and not wheels. I've hauled mine back and forth across US for the last five years that way.

I also used those anchors for years with good success. Only switched when I went with a flat floor and they had to be removed. I miss being able to use em.

I got a set of you want a deal. They even include genuine Michelen rubber for good luck.
