Re: What did you do to your boss today?

My knock-off IDS tool burned out, so I'm going to be heading to a friendly dealer to get a Neutral Profile Relearn done on the car before getting it back out on-track...

today I've installed the MGW Race Spec Shifter. it was an 2 hour job with the uninstall from the Blowfish shifter fix first.
Unfortunately i can't do a testdrive because the damn snow. the hardest part for me was the install from the upper shifter part in the lower shifter box.

Working on my Peterson catch can install. Anyone see any real benefits in heat shrink wrapping the connector ends? I see some have done this but many not.

Burland,

How hard was it to remove the black shifter knob? Any special trick not to ruin the knob. Mine seems to be really be stuck on.

i did this with a strap wrench while i changed the stock radio head unit in the early 2014. it was a hard piece of work but with an extension on the strap wrench i won the game against the loctite without ruin the knob

Thanks for the response. Guess I will keep at it. I broke a medium size strap wrench, I will get a larger one this week and give it another try.

Re: What did you do to your boss today?

The secret is to aim a hair dryer at the threaded joint and heat it up for at least 10 minutes before cranking on it. The heat helps loosen the loctite.

Good luck!

Re: What did you do to your boss today?

Installed spherical bearing at differential end of UCA. 2 hour job took 5 hours because the bushings Ford uses are impossible to press out, had to chop with an air chisel piece by piece to get the rubber and then the sleeve out. All done though will see how the rear axle behaves now that it has all solid bearing attachments points.

Steve, what bearing did you use?
Bill I got the Steeda bearing, reall solid piece, Ford makes tools to press ithe bushing out but they cost $200 and I watched a video of a guy using an air hammer to flatten the passenger side in slightly, then use the flange on the driver side to drive it out in like 30 seconds. Well that flange just flattened and ripped and I basically used the air chisel and a cut off wheel to cut it to small pieces. Then pushed the remaining center slug out and split the shell. Best way is to remove sway bar end links, disconnect the calipers and shocks and UCA and lower the axle with a jack. Luckily I was doing this on a lift so I am able to walk this morning. Was going to use the Prothane poly bushing but after seeing a video of how the stock bushing stretches during acceleration, decided to go with the spherical for positive location and free articulation.

Re: What did you do to your boss today?

I replaced that same bush on my Boss back in July 2014. They can be very difficult, I didn't use the bearing as I thought it would transmit gear noise. I used the Steeda bushing. While it's not as good as the bearing you installed, I figured it had to be better than the OEM bush. It was in poor shape after 10K miles.

I got lucky as my dealer let me use their special tool which uses a threaded rod, bearings, cup and a disc plate. You have to press out the OEM bush and clean up the steel sleeve and reuse it. I installed the Steeda poly adjustable upper control arm at the same time. Rear diff is quite until I hit 80 in 6th gear, then a slight noise can be heard through the poly bush.

Let us know if you are getting rear diff gear noise.
Thanks,
Dave

Re: What did you do to your boss today?

I have the prothane one in my diff bushing location, not sure if it's as good as a spherical bushing but I'm not regretting it. If I could do it over again now I'd go with the spherical.

Re: What did you do to your boss today?

Thanks Dave, I'm not too worried about diff noise as I have solid bearings on all the rear axle connections and it bangs and clunks like a truck back there anyway. becauseracecar
Reason I changed it is because of a high speed vibration that I have from 120-155 that wwilde said he cured by replacing the stock bushing. I originally thought it was my 1 piece DSS driveshaft and replaced my aluminum one with the carbon one. Not it! after seeing what the stock bushing looked like I can imagine it being the problem.
