So true, brakes should really only be able to lock (engage ABS) at 90%+ brake pressure. So the tire becomes the variable in the braking equation. Data is how you read into it. Need Wheel speed channels and brake pressure channels activated in the data stream. Then do some testing to see what max brake pressure is (in Mustangs around 1100 psi or so) and then test where brakes show ABS engagement in a high speed straight line full pressure stop. If ABS activity comes in at lower than say 950 psi then you have too much pad bite for the tire, no lock up, you can go more aggressive. this will expand the pad bandwidth for modulation and trail. It is good to experiment to find the sweet spot for bite, heat resistance and modulation feel. Brakes don't just decelerate the car, they help the turn (rotation) and keep grip where you want it. Abrupt changes in brake force can upset how you wat to distribute load to each corner of the car in the entire lap dynamic. Lots of good stuff to learn from pro engineers and driver coaches out there. That is where the real speed will come from regardless of tire or brake compound. Optimize the combination and then optimize the driver. After that the speed will come in all configurations, I was 13 years into this sport before I totally realized that. And now I am finally learning some stuff. Thanks to @Black Sheep @Black Boss , Pete DiSisto, Dean Martin, Craig Capaldi, Sam Paley, Andrew Aquilante, Leo Capaldi, Billy Johnson, Jade Buford and many others who tried to guide me in the right direction. That is another one of those questions where the answer is “it depends”. Not all 200 tw tires are the same. Results will differ based on car weight, driving style, tire size or compound.
For example, I was running R16’s on my 6 piston set ip with 275/35/19 Hankook RS4 or Toyo R888R tires and could out brake the tires. I ran the same brakes at NCM last weekend with 295/30/19 Toyo Proxes R. The tires were a better match for the brakes.
2013-14 GT500 moved to a 6 piston caliper with 380mm rotors. The GT500s before that are the same fronts as your Boss.Ordered Hawk HP + front and rear brake pads in preparation for my upcoming very first, HPDE. And scrolling through these forms, looking for some guidance on rotors. I’ve read that you can upgrade the front and rear rotors to GT500 rotors which offer better heat dissipation and stopping power. I’m just trying to find information on that now..
You’re correct. Someone posted here that you can upgrade the front brake to the S550 six piston callipers, but you need to order a 2014 Shelby GT500 rotor. I was hoping I could also moved up to the 15 inch front rotor using my 4 piston brembos with a relocation bracket.2013-14 GT500 moved to a 6 piston caliper with 380mm rotors. The rear rotors can be upgraded to the larger 2013-14 size with a bolt on bracket and larger rotor. See link below for kits.
The S550 GT and variants had the same 6 piston front brembo caliper. These rotors came in several colors depending on the variant they were put on. You can use an S550 brembo on an S197 but I believe the rotor must be 2013-14 specific (please correct me if this is wrong). These front 6 piston brembos can be had for ~$250 each.
KIRBY? Do you mean KIRKEY?After 5 years of doing nothing (medical issues) but collecting parts ), I was forced to get a couple new tires and put the new wheels on.
Sunday, I will replace the beat up, discussing factory steering wheel for an NRG.
Week after that? Stereo time.
And den..... Gotta replace my drivers seat. Having difficulty determining a seat. Need a wide seat, but hearing mixed reviews about if the wide Forza or items will fit in the S197. Anyone have input? Been debating NRG, Corbeau, or Kirby.
KIRBY? Do you mean KIRKEY?
If so, that is my choice.
Well I’ll tell ya….I have always used their series 47 seats which were awesome. However, they discontinued them and now there is only a series 65. I just installed one in a car and it’s terrible. I looked online and that’s it…..no more series 47 seats so……Kirkey is out for me.Freaking autocorrect. Yes, Kirkey.
Do you know how well their wider seats fit in the S197?

100% correct. This is the setup I have on my 2007 gt. It works on all s197 year models. You’re correct. I’ll put this upgraded in my back pocket for a winter project.
