I put the car in the air a couple days ago and did a full inspection. Unfortunately, its bleeding oil everywhere. I'm at least going to remove the K member (for the 50th time) and remove the pan and reseal all the front gaskets.

Other than that, I think I needed more torque in the trans mount as it shifted rearward some (its a captive mount, so no risks, just needed tightening).

So the gripe list looks like:

  • replace master cyl (brake) and booster
  • bleed system (abs bleed procedure)
  • install blowfish racing master cyl brace - done
  • remove k member, clean
  • replace all front/lower engine gaskets
  • clean arp bolt for balancer, apply sealant
  • replace master cyl (clutch), bleed <- mine's leaking internally onto the pedal assembly (anyone know the size/length of the fasteners for it?)
  • shift rear axle to center, adjust watts link
  • inspect peterson overflow can for signs of excessive crankcase pressure
  • possibly adjust spacers for passenger side brakes to perfect centering
  • replace upper control arm bushing in axle with spherical once available from BMR
  • repair LED Shiftx assembly on dash (damaged physically, not sure how I managed that)
  • Change oil, verify no further leakage
  • Pull plugs to ensure no oil consumption in motor itself

Not terrible, but a few day's work.

Pictures of the mess (I'll come back and re-order and caption these)

Trans bolt, I think it moved slightly <1mm or so

oil splattered up on scattershield, oil coating base of pan and everything else there

back of pan is dry above 1", so thankfully not rear main seal (nicely done Ford, MMR could never get them to seal on the first go round)

underside of damper seemed dry

wet at drain bolt, but it was properly tight

thankfully dry in the transmission

that's....more oil

slick underside, thankfully not on the header wrap, or I'd have a real good time

I think its leaking above this point, but certainly looks suspect

I think the majority is coming from around here somehow

brake wear looks great.

even pad wear both sides

this kit is simply fantastic. heavy with a one piece rotor, but you can really see the heat that was sunk into it. the color change at the hat is something else.

Installed @pufferfish nicely made brake brace

a reminder to self, but more oil everywhere

Making good progress on both he driving side and the "reduce required maintenance/spend per event" side.

Hopefully after locking down this leak the maintenance cycle is easier to manage. I really want to start saving for a trailer. A local racer hooks me up all the time but I really want to slow down on abusing his generosity :)

I'm interested in hearing about this:
"bleed system (abs bleed procedure)"

What don't I know here...?

so I think I was leaking oil heavily from even the first session, and possibly off the passenger side, can see me losing some in this video segment:

At 11:54 (if it doesn't start there)

a little further back, don't really see much from there (11:05)

Hopefully some clues to whats going on under there

Did you get some gravel between the calipers and barrels on the wheels?

Yeah we were practically paddocked in gravel traps. While I look to have about 4mm clearance if not more many of the rocks were larger. My underbody is covered in them despite not having any offs. I hate that about our local "wild horse pass" tracks.

Decided to race myself:

this is from last year in October, on a cooler day on the left, on the right was last weekend.

The differences in the car are motor, trans, clutch, brakes, tires/wheels

Additionally changes were made in the back: the UCA pickup point on the chassis mount moved from bottom to center (BMR piece), and the RC setting was moved up 2 notches to the top on the watts link. A smaller rear swaybar was installed.

Admittedly, the R7's (right video) probably were better than the pirelli slicks were, but there's some neat things to see in the video:

1) the aluminator revs better, whether due to the clutch or drivetrain, unsure (I thought the exedy setup is heavier than the mcleod with an aluminum flywheel, might not be the case). Probably makes more power
2) the MT82 setup can stay in gear slightly longer, but I think that advantage is negated both by the longer shifts and the fact the magnum setup ran a faster lap
3) the car is much more responsive in all phases of the turn on the right. There's more hand movement and pedal work involved, but ultimately more grip
4) on the right there's definitely less on-throttle steering late in a turn, but I'm getting used to that (it is more responsive to throttle mid corner though)

As far as faster driving is concerned, on the new setup I need to
-roll more softly onto the throttle, and if I do it smoothly I can be adding throttle sooner
-brake much deeper/harder with a smooth release (which came down to pedal confidence, as soon as I fix that I can definitely make up some time there)
-carry more speed in a few corners with more hard braking (see above)

I think with those improvements (which come with seat time and confidence in the rig) the car will be in the 59's in that track on good 315 tires, which should be good enough to compete.

I think I saw some drippy drips but not sure. In any case, I'll blame you for the slickness of the track. :D

So how do us mere mortals do that?
THIS which after looking at aftermarket scanners ($3K-7K) and such, this is a bargain. Too much for personal use after you add in the license but me thinks I could rent this set-up out. I was just reading through the manual, it allows you to do anything a Ford Dealer can do, including calibrating all the Body Motion Sensors....

The software license can be purchased in 2 day to 1 year subscriptions.
