Beef up the MT82 or find a Tremec

My previous Mustang was a 1990 that transformed into a track toy that enjoyed the addition of a Tremec 6 speed behind the 331 stroker.

My latest Mustang is the 2016 GT PP and I am interested in your impressions of the MT82 for a car that serve double duty between street and occasional track days. Would an upgrade to a Tremec be a better option than trying to fortify the MT82? And what else would need to change to fit the Tremec into my GT?

I'd wait until you have issues. The MT-82 can work well and the S550 cars are having less issues. Plus the gearing in the MT-82 works well on most tracks.

We have a twin disc clutch?

Agreed with Rick. Wait until you have issues.

It's my opinion that the S197 MT82s suffered from shifter misalignment and clutch issues which caused a huge number of symptoms and problems. I haven't heard of the same issues with the S550s.

I think the trans on it's own is pretty durable at stock power levels. Just somewhat intolerant of shift timing and alignment issues caused by the the old shifter assembly and clutches.

I can't find any reference of a twin disc clutch. Only a dual mass flywheel on the ecoboost.

Ok I was confused with the GT350 which does have a twin disc clutch, my apologies. Regardless if you're missing high rev shifts I'd add one. Note the 2018 revs higher and does have a twin disc clutch.
Way to get my hopes up lol

Will see how the car behaves once I get back to modifications post impending wedding and honeymoon. It is a good thing my almost wife loves fast cars! Even if she happens to be a GM girl with a strong draw to the Audi R8.

Once I go back into the engine I will be adding the GT 350 intake, throttle body and air filter housing/element. Various discussions with a couple tuners indicate a move in RPM to around 7300-7500.

Thanks everyone.

I would strongly recommend using the Ford Performance M-9452-M8 Power Pack. It includes the GT350 intake, throttle body, cold air kit, and a computer calibration. The computer calibration raises the rev limiter to 7,500 RPM. The Ford Power Pack will not void your power train warranty if installed by and ASE mechanic or Ford dealer.

An aftermarket tune / calibration will void your warranty.

Thanks for the recommendation on the Ford Performance power pack. My concern with the included computer calibration is whether it is flexible and can account for the Kooks long tube headers and Ford Sport by Borla exhaust.

The ford calibrations also take into account engine longevity and are developed in dyno cells that control multiple factors that tuners simply cannot; Weather, altitude, and traction control algorithms. I'm a fan of their calibrations because of this. The power under the curve is always impressive.

I was chewed out by Shaun at AED for running my car with just Kooks lth and xpipe and no tune.... I would get the car logged in any case

I've heard of a couple cars, but they had blowers and sticky back tires.

I am running a tune on the car, just not the Ford Performance calibration. Kooks or as far as I know any long tube header is going to cause a check engine condition.

On the MT82, I just sent $3000 for repairing two transmissions with labour etc., This will be my last MT 82 adventure (these will be numbers 5 and 6....). Once these go will have to get something more solid. Will be installing one next week.

Looking back... Obviously a Tremec Magnum XL would have been a wiser choice right after the first failure..... four years ago!!! Hindsight is always 20/20!!!!!!!!!

Interesting that the S550 is having less problems
