Vorshlag S650 Camber Plates + OEM Struts + 19x11 Square Setup

Finally got to ordering new Vorshlag camber plates and am planning to install them myself while retaining the OEM struts and springs on my base DH.

I'd like to run 19x11 wheel setup with 305/30R19 tires square. I spoke with Vorshlag on the phone, and they indicated I should be able to gain roughly an additional 2.5° of negative camber beyond the factory maximum adjustment which is around negative 1.3 degrees, and therefore get over -3° front camber with the plates. Based on that, it seems like the extra camber should provide enough clearance for the 19x11 front wheels and 305s without needing any additional modifications.

A few questions i'm trying to better understand before installing
  • Any fitment issues running Apex 19x11 ET26 wheels with 305s up front? Any rubbing or clearance issues at full lock?
  • Anything specific to watch out for during the installation?

EricH, my car came from Ford with 305 tires and 10.5" wheels. I am betting that you will have no issues.

@krisk went to 11" and 305 on his car, so I am tagging him here to respond to your question about whether you need -3° of camber just to fit those tires and wheels. I don't think that you need anywhere near that much just for clearance, but since my wheels are 10.5", and I have not tried 11" yet, even though I have 305 tires, I figured I had better let somebody respond who has actually done it in an S650.

(But I bet -3° camber and some sticky tires means higher speeds through the turns)

I've run a few different sizes on my S650. I am currently running the Apex 19x11 ET52 wheels square with a 28mm front spacer, but 295/30 in front and 315/30 in the rear. I wanted to run 315/30 tires square and tried a 25mm spacer up front. They fit without rubbing on the street with my front camber set to -3.5 and Steeda Ultimate Handling Dual Rate springs. On track was a different story. I used masking tape on the fender to monitor whether I was getting any rubbing and sure enough the tire rubs the inside of the front fender. Again, street is fine, track it rubs. I've not run a 305 up front, but I expect it would fit. My issue is I'm running the Continental ECF and it doesn't come in a 305/30/19.

Tire Rack has the 315 on closeout right now for $268, but they were produced in 2021.

So they rubbed on track. :hmmm: They are 26.6" tall and only 11.1" wide, in spite of being 315. And you reduced the size of your spacer by 3 mm. I assume that these are rubbing on the painted area of the fender, since you put masking tape on it. Although you say "inside," so maybe you mean the inboard side? What I mean is, is it rubbing on the outside of the tire up against the fender, not the inside of the tire?

So for my own planning purposes, I guess I need to know how much the Steeda Ultimate Handling Dual Rate Springs bring the tire up into the car further when compressed (since this happens only at the track) as compared to my stock Dark Horse handling package springs.

I was leaning toward a tire that is 305 but is 26.3" tall (so a tad bit shorter) and 11.3" wide (so a tiny bit wider).

How did the staggered setup change the handling of your car? I recall that you were using a square set up - I guess it was 295 and not 305. How did the car handle with 315 square up until you realized it was rubbing?

It actually rubbed on the inside of the painted fender and on the rear of the inside fender liner with the 315. I couldn't give a review of the handling with the 315 square because I was taking it easy just to see if I had any rubbing. I took it out during the Chin "orientation laps", which are as fast as you can drive, but under yellow flag, so no passing. I wasn't pushing it very hard at all.

With the 295 square setup I was getting oversteer, which I expected to continue with the 315 square setup, but I was going to work on by adjusting the rear sway bar to balance it out a little better. Switching to the staggered 295/315 setup gave me a better balance and reduced the oversteer of the square setup. I would still prefer to run a square setup and make the necessary adjustments to the sway bars to dial back the oversteer, but for now I'll stick with my staggered setup. The next step will probably be coilovers. I've reached out to both Cortex Racing and Vorshlag to get their recommendations on a coilover setup.
 
Just ordered new Apex 19x11 ET26 front and 19x11 ET52 on rear and Bridgestone RE71RZ 305/30/19. Hoping to install the camber plates by end of this week and try out the tires early next week or whenever I can finish up the camber plates install and get to an alignment shop. I'm leaving the springs and struts as-is, so should be a direct fit once the camber is adjusted.

Tried installing the vorshlag camber plates last night but really struggled with getting the strut to spindle bolts removed. Don't think I was applying nearly enough force in hammering them out as I was afraid of damaging them if I hammered too hard. Hoping for better luck this evening.

Do you have strut to tire clearance available to reduce the spacer size down to the 20-25mm range? You only need 3-5mm of strut to tire clearance, which could help bring the tire inboard and reduce fender and liner contact.

With the 25mm spacer I had around 3mm of clearance to the strut. The concern, even if I change to coilovers, is the tire rubbed on the rear section of the inner fender liner. Since I was rubbing on the fender as well as the fender liner, I'm not sure what could be done to resolve both and run a 315.

Atlanta has a few spots of noticeable compression so I definitely had slight rubbing on the front, but it cleared after a few sessions. I normally track in Florida where we don't have much elevation changes for this to happen. My camber up front is -2.4 degrees, but I have space to go further.

Atlanta has a few spots of noticeable compression so I definitely had slight rubbing on the front, but it cleared after a few sessions. I normally track in Florida where we don't have much elevation changes for this to happen. My camber up front is -2.4 degrees, but I have space to go further.

How did the tread look at -2.4°? I am guessing they were still worn toward the outside edge after Road Atlanta.

I swapped to Goodyear F1 Supercar 3 tires, and the wear wasn't bad. I took this pic Sunday morning of the front tires while doing a rotation. Saturday both myself and my friend were running the car in back to back sessions (transmission on his GT500 died, the week before at Sebring). So this was wear day 1 after about eight 15-20 minute sessions. The camber plates I have actually came off a GT500, I can't remember the brand but they gave more space for adjustment compared to the ones Ford sells.

Would you mind coming back and reporting to us how many track days you get out of that 3R tire?

It is 100 tw. I have been thinking about running it in a 19" size, but I did not want to have to buy a new set after every track weekend if that is what 100 tw means.
