Made it out to Laguna Seca this past weekend to run NASA with a few racer buddies from AZ, managed to take third in class out of 7 on Saturday and 4th out of 9 on Sunday!
The field was about 35 cars total.

You have a rattling sound when you get near the Rev limit in third, is that the aluminium heat shields round the gearbox tunnel?

AZBOSS:

Nice post and really enjoyed your Race vid as you have an excellent video setup that for me is very instructional. Congrats on your Podium finish! Watching the vid, I wondered if you had the time to freshen up the Boss engine, or if it's the same mechanicals as when you started your race season? Go Team Mustang!

That little yellow Mazda, sounded like a bumble bee.

Hi Guys:

Yeah not sure what the rattling is, could be a number of things but I'm not concerned about it.

Haven't had a chance to look at the engine yet, probably won't have time until end of this month. Thinking Aluminator short block, worst case. If you run the proper fuel for your tune, you won't have issues w/ the stock engine.

Ive had that rattle since the first day i went on track, i posted videos up on the forum asking for help with the noise, ended up traced it to the aluminium heat shields around the gearbox.

We had to rebind them away from the chassis i was getting to the stage where i was going to pull them out completely

On the wiring diagram there is a pair of wires for the fuel pump control as well as CAN+/- that go into that box (restraints control module). http://iihs.net/fsm/?dir=710&viewfile=046%20-%20Supplemental%20Restraint%20System.pdf

I figured it wasn't worth the risk of disturbing these connections, especially since all the 302R and S cars have them still.

If you pull it, report back here with results, please!

Well that little box has been pulled. The car starts just. However, haven't had it out yet to make sure it works without it. I have been thinking about this and it seem to me that the wires for the fuel pump that go into the restraint module are there to shut off the fuel pump if the air bags deploy.

Budget Boss: Good learning there. I hope it works well on the track! BTW--you should consider starting a build thread of your own, car is looking great!

Update on my activities:

1) Highlight reel from Laguna Seca trip. We hired a friend of mine who is a pro video dude to shoot all this stuff. He specializes in aerial video (via drone) but we couldn't get much of that since MRLS is a government-run campground technically and drones are prohibited on those grounds :-/

2) As some of you may have noted in other threads, my car has been parked since I got back from Laguna in July. It was smoking out the exhaust both on and off throttle out on that trip, and has a bit of a cold knock to it. #8 plug is fouled heavily with oil.
Leading cause we think the #8 ring pack is toast. I shoved a borescope down the #8 plug hole and the piston (at least the top) is still intact. May have broken ring lands, though. Won't know until the engine comes out.

I decided to park the car for the rest of the year until I can freshen the engine (looking like Aluminator short block going in starting December). Between my career and ongoing schooling I haven't had time to even think about wrenching on the car, not to mention the cost of refurbishment.

The "good news" is that the motor didn't grenade so the heads and accessories etc should all be re-usable.
Root cause on this was running poor fuel; despite baselining and logging my car on real 100 octane fuel, I used 91 octane plus Torco Accelerator additive during the 2014 season as my primary fuel. Despite what Torco says, this stuff isn't enough real fuel for the car and not a replacement for race gas. So that is an easy problem to fix in the future.

I'll post up more pictures and updates as the parts start to arrive and the engine comes out/goes back in. This is a great opportunity to install a real road-race oil pan as well as remove the AC compressor from the engine.

Also I am thinking of adding the CJ intake in 2015, maybe even at time of this build. We'll see. :)

3) In the meantime, I've been logging track time in our 24 Hours of LeMons race car at Thunderhill and we will be at Sonoma in early December. Great way to get seat time and keep my skills fresh. Our car is a Crown Vic Police Interceptor, we are trying to model it after an A-10 Warthog.
XM7iE7z.png
At Thunderhill we finished 63rd overall out of 216 starting (an official Guinness World Record) and 10th of 72 in-class despite major fuel starvation issues in right hand turns.

Also I managed to get my buddy (and ST2 competitor) to let me drive his C5 Corvette race car, this was a great opportunity to get some perspective on the setup of the BOSS vs. a lighter, less-powerful car. The C5 has ABS disabled so that was a challenge in the first session; I hadn't driven a track car without ABS since 2010. I have some changes that I will be making in 2014/2015 that should make the BOSS even more competitive as a result of my experiences in the C5.

Here is a video of me driving the C5 in Time Trials with a few other cars on track as well. One driver referred to this as "prison-raping" this GTR, haha.

You put down some crazy fast lap times in that car, glad I started behind you :)

Curious to hear what you want to do to the Boss to make it faster, I'm all in for faster!

Here is what I have planned. Not pursuing the CJ manifold at this time in favor of more suspension capability. Might add CJ in the future depending on where I can get the car down to weight-wise and how much additional racing budget I have in 2015.

Main goal is to reduce weight and make the car take a set faster and react faster to steering inputs. Probably going to bump my spring rates up slightly as well.

I may try the "no rear swaybar" setup, but not sure on that yet. It's easy to get another set of rear springs to try this out.

The list is looking good. Way to keep the economy going. BTW, I am putting back the safety restraint system back in. Was having trouble starting the car on Saturday. Had push start the car, lol. Here's what I believe is going on the ECU is looking for the little box and not finding it, so it's sensing that something is wrong. Once I push start the vehicle the ECU stops looking for the little box and goes as if every thing is normal. Will see what happens in a couple of days, the restraint box is at Vorshlag and they are moving the shop and getting ready for SEMA and the Optima Challenge. I dropped my car offf and when they find time they will install the box which is in a box some where in one of the shops right, lol. So, don't pull that little box out.

Cool, keep us posted on what you find out! I'll bet it can be removed and replaced with an inline resistor or something. Not a priority on my end but if you guys figure it out, I'll duplicate!
