Re: Track Time

Another thought I have is for guys running an external oil cooler in front of the radiator. The oil cooler is mounted in front of the radiator shedding 240+ degree hot air. This heated air then goes across the radiator. 240+ degree air is not going to cool the coolant, in fact it wil probably heat it up. It seems that adding an oil cooler in front of the radiator would be counter productive. Granted you are cooling the oil, but the coolant is what needs to be cooled to keep engine temps down.

seeing how the 2013 GT500 has no grill at all I think is a great tell tale as to how restrictive the grill is on air flow

Let's not get ahead of ourselves here, that is to keep the engine at an acceptable temp when doing sustained 6250RPM at 200+mph; the car will exhaust its fuel supply before it can overheat!

Drew are you going to run your 302S grille at the track? If so it will be interesting if there is any difference in cooling compared to your billet grille.

Re: Track Time

Hi Rick:

Already ran it last month! I haven't plugged in my OBD to check actual ECT with it installed, so I don't have any quantitative data to share :( . A Viper driver there actually asked me what kind of temperatures I run at the track, I told him "somewhere between 'C' and 'H'". :)

I was pushing the car as much as I could and it never stumbled or went into limp mode, although the only time I ever peeked down at the temp gauge was on the straight. Ambient temp was around 95*F. This was our "fastest" track with top speed of around 140mph prior to braking.

Here is some blatant video whoring from that day:

Re: Track Time

Ran this past weekend at VIR with SCMC, Track Club USA and SVTOA and had a great time. Ford Motor Company had 4 trailers, 3 2013 GT 500s, 2 Boss 302s and a 302S that they gave lap rides in.
On track I ran in the orange intermediate group and really had a steep learning curve. VIR is super fast and the run off areas are not forgiving looking with a lot of down hill or barriers close to the track.
1st sessions on Saturday just tried to understand the line and get used to the many blind approaches. Got a best of 2:30.33 and was sweating up a storm in the 85 degree heat. My instructor Ben Dawson who is a south east Spec Miata racer was great and really helped me build confidence and start to attack the curbs through the Esses and to carry the car farther I to the brake zone at the approach to turn 14. By the 2nd session on Sunday I was running consistent 2:26s with a 2:25.45 and 2:25.035 my best laps of the weekend.

Total of 8 30 minute sessions for $470, included 2 tee shirts and a poster, great deal, Tony Sorrentino of SCMC and ModularBoss.com ran a great event as did Pat Madigan of TrackClubUSA. Marcie Cipriani of SVTOA did a great job with coordinating the Ford SVT folks who spoke at the banquet and took the time to talk to all of us about what Ford is doing and how they appreciate what we do with their cars.

There were at least 4 LS and 4 standard Boss cars running, many Shelby's and many 1987-2009 Mustangs on track. Some fast Corvettes out there too.

Tony is organizing a Boss Mustang gathering at Summit Point WVa on August 11 and 12th. Check it out at modularboss.com and join us it would be cool to see as many of the NE, Mid Atlantic and SE Boss owners on track as possible.

Re: Track Time

What did you get up to on the back straught? My best was 145. Been there twice so far, really great track.

Re: Track Time

Sounds like a blast Steve! I bet it was cool to see that many Mustangs on track at the same time. I was kind of chuckling to myself on your writeup of VIR as I'm headed to RA in a couple weeks for my first time and learning the track. At 4 miles and significant elevation changes it looks like an equally fast track!

Re: Track Time

139 on the back straight, my instructor was braking in his Miata at the arrow, I was braking at the 500 board and then accelerating up to turn 14 LOL! Took three sessions to stay on it over the crest.

VIR is a big boy track, hit 131 on the approach to turn 1 and 122 on the flat Esses approaching the uphill. Still lots of work modding my Gentlemen's attachments to equal my car on this track. Was really pitching and rotating the car in the slow corners much fun.
With 93 degree temps Saturday and Sunday my car saw 225 degree peak coolant temps for the first time. Glad I did the air to air oil cooler, I think my right rear axle seal seeped a little so I ordered new rear axle bearings and seals from Tousley only $39 for the set. Gonna remove the rear backing plates and gonna get Goodridge stainless brake hoses finally, Gary's Boss 302 lines have served me well but it's time for an upgrade. Motul 600 is great, brakes stayed with me all weekend no problems with 8 30 minute sessions over 2 days. Next year I am planning to do this event again and go see the World 600 at Charlotte Sunday hope others here can make it. I met some great folks and Lee Holman signed my dash panel. We talked for an hour about the old days and his GT40 MK II that was built from all the spares they had left over from the LeMans days.
Wish I could join you guys at Lime Rock Thursday but have to work sometime to pay for this fun.
Steve

Re: Track Time

I know what you mean about the crest of the hill on the back straight. You're not looking straight as much as you are watching the flagger on the left right there to see if HE says someones down at the bottom spun out! Big boy track is a good way to put it ! ;D Will miss u on Thurs....

Re: Track Time

I went to that event and did 140 mph on the back stretch. We had a lot of Ford support at the event and I think by the end of the weekend, they were wore out too. For some reason, I cannot post pics here and for some reason, y'all can't see them on ModularBoss.com so see if you can catch them on our facebook page?

Glad you came out Steve and we'll see you at Summit Point in August. We want to make this a predominantly Boss event but I understand there is no way we could pay for the track and insurance with just a handful of Bosses so we have to join with TCUSA.

We will also have a southeast Boss meet at the new Atlanta Motorsports Park in Dawsonville, GA. That event date is September 22-23, 2012 so if SP is too far, then join us at AMP in GA.

Re: Track Time

The good news:
  • Confirmed multiple 1:04 laps at Limerock Park (1:04.21 was best) using GTech Pro Fanatic RR (http://www.gtechpro.com/rr_fanatic.html). Given the speed of the group and the fact that I don't have the uphill totally figured out yet this isn't bad at all. No one was as fast as the Boss in my group but the I know the car is capable of close to or equal to a 1:00 lap on that track. Still work to do there....
  • The Nitto NT-555R-II's are kicking ass bigtime (yes, Gary is a genius... ;D )
  • Upgrade to Pagid RS-14 pads up front was what I was looking for. Even more bite than before requiring less pressure resulting in smoother transitions into turns. TBD on longevity of pad/rotor combo but I suspect results close to what I was seeing with the RS-29 compound based on what I saw from 1 hard day of use.
  • The track temps were only in the low 80's but still no evidence of heat issues (highest head temp was 217F on the Aeroforce gauge)

The not so good news:
  • Cracked windshield from the damn BMW that wouldn't give me a point by and kicked up a rock.
  • Looks like it may be getting close to needing new tires up front, will switch L/R at next event. 17 heat cycles so far, I may be able to get to 25 or so. Not bad really ::)

Re: Track Time

Had a blast at Limerock yesterday! My run group (Intermediate 1) was really slow and the same as Pete the Boss was fastest in the group. That is after I learned the track. In the first session there was a fast GTR but he must have gotten bumped up because i didnt see him the rest of the day. There was lots of traffic so it was very hard to get a clean lap. I was averaging a 1:15 and a I had a best lap of 1:07. Not bad for my first day at Limerock! It was nice meeting Pete and a couple of other Boss guys! My lap timing app trackmaster for android was not working due to bad GPS signals. I'm getting those times from looking at the GoPro videos.

1:07 is very good for your first time there. Are you on stock tires?

Nope, I'm on Hankook v12 :)
I feel they are Close to the pirelli's at less than half the cost.

The rotors look fine after using the hawk pads. Funny thing though the pads that were on the right side front and rear look noticibly more worn than the left side. This is my first time changing brakes. Is that a normal occurrence? Should I watch this? The OEM brakes look the same and I've used them before on 2 track days. I'll see if I can post a pic tomorrow to show the difference.

Re: Track Time

I had a few pucker times on the downhill. I was taking it very close to flat out in 4th somewhere between 4&5000 rpms. Almost went off track, which was very scary as there is not much runoff area. Big pucker factor. Nick longhi has a video "drive Limerock" and I watched it over and over and over. I had a real good sense of the track before getting on it. 2 things stuck with me that really helped. "turn 1 is a classic entry speed corner... .... Carry a lot of speed and sort it out later..." and the uphill which a lot of people were having trouble with "turn in early and keep the wheels straight before the crest"

One guy lost it on the uphill in the first session, luckily no damage. Just a spin.

Being that I had those 2 turns worked out from the start I just had about 1/2 a dozen more to go!

My average laps were 1:15. I had an absolute blast there! Can't wait to go back! That might be my last track day for the year :(
I'm getting married in July and will be away for 3 weeks. The wedding/honeymoon ate up a lot of my disposable income. So, I will have to live through you guys. :)

The left and right side pads should be wearing similarly. If therevis a bug difference between them you may have an issue in you brake lines
I would have that checked out. Also, silly question but i have to ask, do you
have the same pad model L/R ?

Re: Track Time

As my first track day ever, Lime Rock Park couldn't have possibly been any better! Had a great, great time! Was lucky to get a really good instructor first time out that we hit it off really well.

Pete, it was great meeting you, and I appreciated your insight and help as I am such a newbie at it. Was also great meeting you too Jayand the owner of the CO Boss, and your Boss is awesome as well!

Some observations:

The standard Boss 302 really impressed me. It is not possible to understand the car's capabilities unless you take it on a track. This car has tons of grip for a stock car, and the chassis is extremely well balanced. Power delivery is perfect for the chassis and brakes too.

On my first session, I had to 'excercise" out my inner drag racer! I was using 3rd through 5th gears and really having a tough time on my corner entry speeds as I was going way too fast! Saw a tad over 130 mph on the front straight which really killed my line on Big Bend as I was braking way too late!

On my next session, I decided to keep it in 4th gear for most of the track and WOW, what a huge difference that made in my smoothness! This car has so much torque in the mid range that 4th gear pulled very strong out of the corners, so much so that I actually hung the tail out ( until the advance track saved my butt) coming out of Big Bend on one occassion! I also found that by staying in 4th I could hit the rev limited on the front straight and just tap about 125 mph and I had plenty of time to smoothly enter the braking zone without having to try and "control" the car into the apex on Big Bend. A few laps I had waive byes in this area and had to shift to 5th to get by, but again, it really hurt corner entry as too much speed then had to be scrubbed off. This car flat out flys.

I felt very comfortable on the track overall. I was able to put 2-3 laps on my run group, consistently. Only car that I couldn't put 2 laps on was a base C6 vette driver who stubbornly would not give me the waive bye. I had discoverd a way to get great speed on the downhill so I could enter the front straight carrying a ton of speed, and my instructor kept telling me "get respectfully on his tail and make him waive you bye", after about 3 laps of her saying this, and me drafting him Nascar style, he went into big bend at a high rate of speed off the front straight, and almost overshot the entire corner (much less the apex) and if it was a real race I could have easily got under him in the braking zone. On "No name straight", he finally gave me the waive bye. There was a 2011 Camaro SS who was also very stubborn to give me the waive bye too, and that was somewhat frustrating, but other than that, every driver in my group gave me the waive byes and allowed me to really get a good feel for the Boss 302. What an amazing, amazing car.

Only thing I would really like to possibly modify are the brakes. The car has plenty of power, but a better brake, and for that matter, a better tire, would really make it a lot more fun to drive on the track.

I drove 3 1/2 hours to get to the track. I averaged 23 mpg at about 75 mph most of the way. I used almost exactly a full tank of full for 4, 25 minute sessions. On the return trip home I averaged 24.2 mpg going a little faster, maybe 80 mph or so most of the way home. Maybe the motor loosened up a bit on the track? lol.

I set the shocks back to setting 2, and used the Silver key for the ride home, cranked up the A/C and had a nice, smooth ride home! I'm so impressed with the Boss overall, Ford did a great, great job sorting out this car.

As far as my driving, my instructor went over my evaluation with me and recommended that on at my next SCDA track day, if Novice class is full, I can run with Intermediate, but with an instructor. I'm fine with that, as I felt the instruction was KEY in me overcoming some of my preconcieved notions and just listening to the coaching as we drove and me commenting each time I made a mistake, my instructor made suggestions that I would try each successive lap and it really helped my smoothness. I think next time I am going to try harder on being smooth than concentrating on being as "fast" as possible. I can tell that its true that a smooth driver will naturally be a faster driver. As a new driver, I know I was a little anxious and probably a little overally aggressive, but I was just excited to see what the Boss could do.

For the record, even though I have nothing to compare it to, I thought the SCDA was a great organization, and very well run. Everyone was great, friendly, and interested that I had a good time and was learning. That, coupled with a great facility (Lime Rock), and making a couple of new friends, this was one of the best days of my life!
