Re: Track Time

Oh, one more thing.

I forgot to mention that Jeff Andretti was the classroom instructor. I thought this was very cool as for a first time driver on a historic track, we were blessed to have the son of one of racing's most famous names as our coach. I remember following Jeff's career through the 80's up to his time in Indy car and always was a fan, so this, to me, was just icing on the cake. Cool guy too, just a regular car guy. Was an honor getting to meet and talk car control with him.

As much as I love drag racing, this smokes it hands down. I've never had so much fun driving a car in my life as at this track day!!! ;D ( can you tell I had a good time??lol)

1:07 is very good for your first time there. Are you on stock tires?

Nope, I'm on Hankook v12 :)
I feel they are Close to the pirelli's at less than half the cost.

The rotors look fine after using the hawk pads. Funny thing though the pads that were on the right side front and rear look noticibly more worn than the left side. This is my first time changing brakes. Is that a normal occurrence? Should I watch this? The OEM brakes look the same and I've used them before on 2 track days. I'll see if I can post a pic tomorrow to show the difference.

The left and right side pads should be wearing similarly. If therevis a bug difference between them you may have an issue in you brake lines
I would have that checked out. Also, silly question but i have to ask, do you
have the same pad model L/R ?

Later I will take some pics of the pads. Not 100% about that.
Gary would know better as he uses them more than me.

Glad you had a good time! It is a very addictive habit, I mean hobby :)
It was great meeting other Boss owners. Every Boss owner I've met online and person has been really cool and helpful! It's a great group of people!

For the guys that don't like to point you by, you will see one or 2 every where you go. Just watch this video and you will really laugh at them:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7iUKaPlBl8&feature=youtube_gdata_player

All that speed is great on the front straight. It means you were taking the downhill fast! I was getting up there too. Not sure how fast because I didn't have the balls to take my eyeballs off the road :) if you plan on going back to Limerock I could send you the video "drive Limerock" it was a great help. You could send it to Pete when you are done and he could send it to anyone else that would like to use it.

I've been driving with SCDA since 2009 and it has always been well organized, plenty of instruction, and the people that run it are a good group of people!

Glad you had fun and I hope to see you on track!

Re: Track Time

Looks like I need to drop the motor in my track car to replace a bunch of seals. I have a track day scheduled in a couple weeks at Sears Point, so I may need to run the Boss instead. Boss needs oil and trans fluid done if I take it. I was hoping to figure out the 3rd lock outs and get around to a brake upgrade before tracking it again but I doubt I will have time.

Here is a couple of laps from my second session.

Re: Track Time

Jay,

That video was funny!!!

Yeah, my best part of the track was the uphill all the way to the downhill into the front straight. I need to work on every part of the track, and my smoothness, but those sections felt the most comfortable to me. Big bend was a tough corner to me. The double apex took some getting used to, hopefully next time I go out I can work some more on it.

Bought a GoPro so I can review my lines and such after I get home next time.

Re: Track Time

Now, next time you get someone that doesn't want to let you pass, you will think it's because he thinks he's driving "Flat out" lol

Re: Track Time

BIR with BMW Club, 2/3 Jun

Last weekend I was at Brainerd MN for North Star BMW’s 2-day driving school.
I was the only domestic car there, and several people came over to look at a real car. And they were impressed (as we know they should be). ;D
Weather was great—but a few sprinkles midday Sunday which only slowed us down on one session. Temps were 55-60 in the morning, and 75-80 in the afternoon.
They run the short Competition course (drag racing was on the strip).
I was in the Intermediate group, and fit well, because I passed more cars than passed me.
Luckily everyone stayed off the concrete walls—there’s a LOT of concrete at BIR.
Only 4 sessions each day, but typical of a training event. I didn’t do my 5th Sunday session at 5:20 pm because I had a 4.5 hour drive home.
Only broke a 1:59.2 lap time--was hoping for better, but never got it.

The Good:
DBA4000 rotors and Carbotech XP12 front brakes worked well.
My instructor was great, about 70 year old experienced racer (didn’t ask what organization or class, but most likely runs older BMWs)—he quickly pointed out I need to be smoother, and not saw the steering thru a turn, and harassed me big time when I didn’t get to the apex or didn’t use all of the track on track out (“you paid for the whole track, use it!”). Smooth is fast.
NT-05 are wearing well. Looks like 34 front 32 rear psi cold (~41/39 hot) works well for me. Anticipate wearing out the first set on next trip with about 6 days on them.
215 max ECT on my Aeroforce gauge with factory grill/hood
My instructor just loved that V-8 rumble as we moved into the staging area

Bad:
Shifter is starting to bug me—just isn’t firm and precise. My instructor said shift slow and it will be fine—into neutral, pause about .5 second, then into gear. That helps, but of course we all want fast shifts. I’ll kick the MGW can down the road for a little longer.

This weekend is BMW Iowa chapter driving school at MAM.

My instructor is president of http://www.frozenrotors.com/. Quite a few of the BMWs were running his rotors, and he sells Hawk and PFC pads. He can slot or cryo treat rotors you send him. Or you can buy new ready to go. Other than driving with him for 2 days, and talking to others who use his rotors, I have no idea if they’re better than others, but he has a dedicated following. Suggest including him in your rotor shopping list.

Re: Track Time

Sounds like a great time. I should have gone. After getting to run a couple sessions on the "short" track, I found it's actually a pretty fast and fun track. At 2.5 miles it's not really "short" :D

Re: Track Time

Good deal Wayne, sounds like you guys are making the most of two month summer there :D

I have no idea why I found the pressures so low on the 05's worked for me. It's not record breaking but ran 2:36 at Sebring with them at 30 PSI and completely even wear ??? Been running the Hoosier take-offs at almost 40 PSI and they worked better for me there.

40 on slicks seems really high. I start 26/25 cold and land at 32-33 hot. Hoosier recommends 32-34 hot. Our cars are on the heavy side so a little more pressure is needed than lighter cars. The guys I buy them from running Corvettes start at 22 cold

Re: Track Time

Is there possibly difference because of atmospheric pressure because of your altitudes? I was running the NT-555 about 40 hot. Not slicks but it seems hotter than u may be running. Cold was 33 to 34.

I also run the 555RIIs and other r-comp DOTs at 40-42 hot, slicks are a different story.

Scott, I'm sure snow will be back in a few weeks. Mosquito season is pretty short up here. ;D

I'll try dropping the pressure a few more pounds as I work thru next weekend at MAM. They'll propably be shot Sunday afternoon anyway, so might as well experiment a bit.

Re: Track Time

I don't know, maybe I drive weird. If I put more then 31 or 32 in the NT05 I would wear the middle band out in one run. I was running the slicks at 35 in front and corded the edges fast. They did not roll over but running Sebring this weekend I was around 38 in front and they look great even all the way across. The rear I have at 35, big difference I know but I like it.

Right now I only have 2.3 on the camber, going to max it once the springs arrive and see what happens. Also Dean and his brother told me to run them up around 40 hot, they start around 26-27 on them. I am starting at 27-28.
