Re: Track Time

Rainbow coalition? That has a different meaning here on the left coast. ;) Those M3's are easy pickings in the Boss. You pull up behind them for a second and they immediately pull over for a point by. ;D

Cali, Larry H Miller passed away a couple of years ago. One of his sons that was at BTA and he looks like Larry and drives their 302R. Have fun at Sonoma.

Laguna Seca Play Day

I went to Laguna Seca for a track day with Fat Boss - Andy and Paul who owns a PW Boss. It was my first time there and it was awesome! Temps hit 80 degrees which is really unusual there for this time of year. The usual in June is fog in the morning which burns off to mid 60's. Nicole with the black LS was also there and she's turned into a self proclaimed track rat. She is now running in the advanced group and holding her own.

During my first hot lap I went off the track at the corkscrew. When you get to the top of the corkscrew you cannot see the bottom or the apex in turn 8A so the trick is to point your car at the tree in the background. I thought my instructor said the big tree so my first lap I get to the top and point at the big tree and missed the corner by 10-15 feet! Fortunately I'm not the first one and it's hard packed which you can see in the photos. It was hilarious actually and we got a good laugh out of it and so did the course marshal after I got black flagged. :D I quickly learned you aim for the small tree. All in all we had a great time and I can't wait to go back. Too bad it's a long haul so the next time I'll shoot for a two day event.

This event was with the local Porsche club so there were a bunch of GT3's and RS's but most of them were in the advanced group. Still I had fun passing 993 and 996 turbos and a bunch of other P cars. There was about a dozen Nissan GT R's and one in our group. I gave him a point by but made sure I gave him a mirror full of Boss until we ran into traffic and he got away from me. It must have been a first generation as I keep even with him on the straights.

This photo shows about the most body roll I experienced with my new suspension setup.

And this delayed my drive home about 30 minutes. Glad this wasn't at the track

Re: Track Time

It was a great day at the track for me. Car ran flawlessly and I even left the A/C running once and didn't notice till we got back to the pits. No leaks, no axle pukes, no nothing. Rick's car looks great. It really made me appreciate the lowing in the rear from his new springs. His friend joined us from the Sacramento area and was pretty dang fast in his PW Boss.

Paul's car.

There's more than one way through this section. ;)

You're either leading or just one of the pack.

Re: Track Time

You guys look great at LS!
Rick, I know what you're saying about "drive to the tree". At BIR, coming out of the keyhole, my insructor said "Go to the wall", then asked why I moved toward the right hand wall--he ment the left wall!
My saying is "Simple communication is never simple."
And your suspension looks great--you guys sure have killed the brake dive & body roll.

Re: Track Time

Took the Boss today to Sears Point, had a lot of fun. There were a bunch of kids with Mustangs, but they all had nice 18" setups and big brake kits so I am going to use that as an excuse for why they could pass me on the brakes. I had some serious brake and tire issues, still on stock brakes and tires and no ducts but it was spur of the moment to switch cars for one day. Tires got greasy fast and the brakes just did not want to grab, then I was playing with the pressures and dropped them a bit too far but the tire shop was closed and I had forgotten my hand pump so I ran 2 sessions on about 36 hot... it was not pretty. I was gliding everywhere, and someone popped a motor so there was oil with the chalky stuff all over 5 and there was more right after 6. I hit 5 too fast and slid a little into the chalk then fishtailed pretty bad but I was able to recover and get into 6 with no real incident other than the load dropped in my GF's pants, as she was riding shotgun. I don't think the instructors saw, because I passed the test to get into group 4.

My gf did well in hyperdrive.

I ended up having an issue with the brakes kicking on ABS even on light braking, once the tires were at the low pressure. I am guessing that it is just that the tires were so greasy, as hot brakes usually just makes the soft pedal. Anyone else had it happen? If I did a slow lap, I would be able to brake almost normally a couple times before it started again.

Re: Track Time

I am going to make it out to Cali (to drive!) one of these days...you guys look good out there at LS! Especially Andy's RR Boss...that one hits close to home :)

Cali--you need the ducts, and the stock pads are not adequate for track use on a car this heavy.

Re: Track Time

This year the NorCal Shelby club added a two day event at LS after I signed up for yesterday's event. Supposedly the events are handed out by a lottery so if the Shelby club gets the dates again next year in Summer you'll have to head out of the heat there and make it to the coast. It was pretty warm there yesterday at 80+ but that's unusual. Probably a lot cooler than AZ though.

Re: Track Time

Only had video of one session, best lap on it was 2:10. Not very good at all, I used to do that in the E30 iirc. The inconsistent brakes were tough as I had to brake really early every time in case they decided to not work, and I am a timing kind of driver (I use visuals to start timers, like 2 count after the brake marker) and I could not time anything. But mostly I was just stinking it up.

Yeah if you can't trust your brakes it sucks to be on the track.

Truer words have never been spoken. One of the guys we went out with never did really give it all last week after losing the right front caliper bolts on his Z06. It'll take him a couple events before he trusts them again I'm sure.

Re: Track Time

A little embarrassing, but here I am at Sears Point. ABS kept coming on even on light braking, not sure whether it was from the tires being so greasy (did the sessions rapid fire) or if it was something else, but even so I should have done better. I had to stay off the berms because I was getting all loose every time I touched one, like turning into 10 it just refused to turn in until I got past them. Could it be the live axle causing the tire on the pavement to bounce? Will figure it out.

Cali - unless those berms are REAL high the tail should not be getting crazy on you (assuming you are not pulling too much lateral G's going though them). I run my rear shocks at 4 (fronts at 5) and just got back from NJMP where I was pouncing on the the turtles on many turns at speed. You may be right that your tires just are not stocky enough. I was running Nitto NT-555R-II's, 305's in the rears.

Told you RA was worth the tow. ;) yes most people are slow through the uphill left hander after Canada. The GT3 on street tires was just a feather on turn in turn then full throttle up the hill. Fun times.

Peter
You were absolutely right.....so right in fact that as soon as we got home we booked another trip over there in 4 weeks with the PCA ;D

Got a bunch of FL buds in GT3RS coming to the Nord Stern RA event. They are quick running 2:30's on RA1's. They are also a beer swilling crowd and a good group of guys.

Peter
Wow 18 GT3RSs signed up already. There's enough of them they could have their own run group. How many do they sell in the US each year?

Re: Track Time

Pete, I didn't have issues with the berms at my THill track day a couple months ago, I think part of it was the pressures and the heat. There was no air available and I forgot my pump, so I had to even them out to what the lowest one was which was about 37 hot. I was running 5 front 4 rear, and I still got a little rear end squirm on hard braking even before the brakes got hot and ABS went nuts. I was getting squirm at THill too. Tranny was better this time, but this track is not as high speed as the last one.
