Re: Track Time

Cool videos. I see Kevin got new brakes. He ran out of brakes at TH in Oct. and didn't run on Sunday. And Tom didn't bring his Boss???

There was a tracked prepped late 70's El Camino at the NorCal Shelby Mini Nats on Friday but the guy didn't take it off the trailer. I was hoping to see it run.

I had the same confidence in my dealers ability to fix the clutch issue (the clutch not disengaging and the pedal not returning from the floor) before I replaced my Boss. However, the only guidance from Ford was to say that they were aware of a problem, but we also know the problem cannot be replicated by your dealer, so "it's normal".

Re: Track Time

Date(s): 5 - Jan 3013

Event Organizer: NASA

Track: Homestead Miami Speedway (Grand Am Course), FL

Altitude of Track: 26’ below sea level!

Temperature: low of 68 first session, high of 84

Tires: Nitto NT-01 275/40R18, Square

Brake pads: Carbotech XP20 front / XP08 rear

General Comments:

Cooling, never saw above 214 on my AeroForce Guage, cooling mods; CoolTech Air-to-Oil cooler and Boss 302S Grill. Also have World Challenge splitter.

The good: First NASA Florida event of the year, new track I had never been to HMS before, used my HANS device for the first time with no negitive effect, I was worried it would be hard to see to my right and left.

The bad: Long drive from Tampa, bought a SmartyCam be didn't receive it before leaving.

MPG: 5.8 Track miles driven 163.3 (skipped last session to load so I could leave early)

I so can't wait to drive VIR when it's 85 degrees. I swear I heard slush in that video, not for me, glad no reported bad offs at last weekends event.

I am thinking about driving Road Atlanta in a couple of weeks, but I don't want to waste my money. No slush down here but still a cold track is not as much fun on summer tires. I should save my money until March for Barber.

Re: Track Time

I took the Boss to Harris Hill Road this weekend for half a day of lapping. This track day was the first in which my car was not 100% stock. I recently replaced the stock Pirellis with Hankook Ventus V12 evos. And on the day before the track event, I replaced the stock Ferodo pads with Pagid RS-29 in front and RS-56 out back.

My first session was a bit of a mess as usual, but after that I really started getting dialed-in to the car. On this particular day, I started the tires at 36 warm and ended-up at 41 hot in front and a little higher in back. The tires were predictable and had progressive breakaway characterists. I was rarely surprised by anything they did. I don't know that they have more grip than the Pirellis, but my overall impression is that I like them better (especially when factoring-in their price).

The Pagids did a great job. I had no problems with brake modulation and braking force was improved. On the way home, they made a very little bit of noise (squealing) at the end of each stop, but it was almost nothing to speak of. Today, on the way to work, they made no noise whatsoever.

I have not gone crazy with data analysis yet, but I do have a couple of basic facts from which I have drawn some conclusions.

Fastest Lap, Top Speed, Max. Deceleration, Specs

1. 1:32.160, 106.1, -1.00 g, GOOD, stock tires/pads
2. 1:34.299, 103.7, -0.92 g, WORN, stock tires/pads
3. 1:32.267, 110.7, -1.07 g, GOOD, uprated tires/pads

Conclusion:

* Lap times began to suffer as my stock tires and pads wore. Duh.

* By allowing later braking and therefore, extending the longest straight, the new tires and uprated pads improved my top speed a whopping +4 mph over my stock configuration. They also improved maximum deceleration an additional -0.07 g.

* But lookee there - I didn't improve my fastest lap.

I am disappointed, but not surprised. A single lap is comprised of about a thousand things and my new tires and pads only improved about a hundered of those. It is still my job to nail the other 900 to get my best lap. But I'm not a pro driver and I don't get out to the track enough these days to stay sharp and on my game. I'm guessing this applies to many of us. I am very pleased with my upgrades, but I am absolutely making a statement here about investing in yourself (the driver) vs. investing in go-fast parts.

I will review the Pagids in more detail later in the Pagid thread.

I have video coming soon. It was a great day and I am in-tune with the Boss more than I ever have been. I am looking forward to building on this progress.

Re: Track Time

Good writeup Jimmy. The worst part about your assessment of single fastest lap times is it actually gets harder the more you do it and faster you get. Nailing those 1000 things all in one lap is like picking a perfect NCAA bracket :-\

Re: Track Time

Also, no matter what upgrades you put on, it is rarely an instantanious improvement on time. It takes awhile to adjust your driving style to take full advantage of the upgrades. It would be interesting to see what your corner speeds were comparing stock and modified. My assumption would be that they were actually slower because you overbraked going into the turn. It's very easy to do with your upgraded brakes and tires.

I'd bet you would have killed your old time with a little more time. 8)
