Re: Track Time

Okay, here is the first video. This is me following a friend in a highly modified Audi TT. I left the beginning, so you can get a sense of what kind of track this is. Because of the focal length of the GoPro, I look further away from the TT than I was and than I had hoped for the sake of the video. However, it is a good quality video and you should be able to watch it full screen with no problem.

Notes:

* I use all of the track better on exits than on entry. Sometimes, that is because I'm not a pro driver, other times, it is because the side of the track is lined with rocks and I didn't want to pelt the R8 behind me, nor jack-up my own car for no good reason.

* It looks smooth, but that is a bumpy track and I was flip-flopping around like a fish out of water. Some of the video where everything appears to be serene - I'm shitting myself thinking I'm about to bounce off the track.

* Speaking of fish, on some of the corners (especially the sharp downhill left), my car leans like a trawler returning with the day's catch. Also, watch for the brake dive.

Great comments, guys. Gary, hitting every 1000 marks in one lap IS the challenge, which among other things, keeps us coming back to chase that time. Dean, I totally agree with your comment about how improvements in one area can make it difficult in another. How was I supposed to hit all of my marks, when they moved? Like I said, that is all part of learning and part of the challenge. I know with a little more time I can build on what I learned.

The 2nd video will be from the camera on my car. If memory serves, it should have some interesting things on it.

Re: Track Time

Holy $*&& that asphalt looked like it was from an abandoned highway in NW South Dakota! Were those all really cracks in the surface?? I understand the reason you were flip flopping around like dying bullhead. If you're getting the Crown Vic body roll and doing headstands under hard braking, there's nothing wrong, you're just doing it right ;D Time for some stiffer springs!

Re: Track Time

Dean's comments are right on the money. I usually look at interval timing for the answers to 'what went wrong' or 'where did my time increase'. It's a pain to do with videos, but I don't have any fancier tools to measure interval times.

Re: Track Time

And here is the 2nd video:

Grant, I have the fancy DA tools, but I'm a beginner DAG and it takes me awhile to sort through all of that stuff. For this track day, I plan to mostly just look at braking data to try and quantify the differences between the stock pads and the new Pagids. It's all geeky fun to me. ;)

Fun Trivia:

* The guy at the beginning of these videos isn't me. It's my friend Jeff and he is the GoPro owner.

* That's not a real chase of the R8. The driver was a beginner and it was my turn with the camera, so I just followed him around for awhile. At the end of the day, he let me drive the R8 and I dead matched the Boss' best time. They are very evenly matched cars, but the R8 feels better in almost every way. Boss engine in an R8? Oh, mommy.

Re: Track Time

Cool vid. Yea the first time I came up against an R8 at the track I figured he'd blow right by the Boss but it didn't happen and he could drive it. I was equally surprised how closely matched the two cars are on the track. I'd still rather risk a bad day at the track in a Boss than a 6 figure R8 though

Re: Track Time

Yes. V8 R8. ;)

I was just watching this video (#2) again when I noticed something. If you look around the 5 minute mark, I take a downhill left turn and get into a tank slapper. Like the rough track, the video doesn't make it look like much, but it sure felt like it.

Re: Track Time

I had mostly a great time today at Thunderhill running with Track Classics. There were 21 cars in two run groups and 7-30 minute sessions although I only ran 5. Other than my clutch sticking to the floor all day it was perfect. Just so you can see exotics do show up to the track here's a photo of an Aventador and a MP4-12C that ran in the "Fastest" run group sitting side by side. Second photo shows a GT3 RS 4.0 Bad Boy along side a virgin 2013 302S. it was it's first track day ever and the owner was getting live track side setup tips from one of our favorite FR employees. ;) I invited the owner to join BMO.

Video of Pete and I at Lime Rock on 4/6. Great day of fun with the Champlain District PCA. Really nice group of folks and my sign off Instructor Scott was aces.
Cold day 28 degrees when we got there so grip was at a premium but any day at the track beats any day anywhere else :D

Re: Track Time

Yeah, since Pete and I were non P Car drivers and not known to the club we were put in the Yellow group so we were far and away the fastest cars in the group. First 2 sessions were just hell as no one was giving point bys. Later in the day they were much better. It was a great day to shake out the cars from all the mods done over the winter and to get the driving rust cleaned off. Check out my perfect 5-3 down shifts at the end of the front straight,
Auto blip does work well and takes some work out of setting up for turn in. Also near the last few laps you may notice me switching on the Diff cooler pump, I have the warning light on the temp gauge set to light up at 225, I glance in the rear view and see it and switch on the pump. Temp came back down below 225 after 1/2 lap, cool to see it all work like I envisioned.

Nice 8)

Re: Track Time

Sounds like a great day, Steve. Also glad that all of your gear was working the way you wanted.

Man, I gotta just straight-up ask you - do you really like driving with your hands at 11 and 1 o'clock? Have you tried other hand positions? If you have and that's your thing - rock on. None of my business. :p

I don't know why I tighten up my grip, I try to start at 10&2 but when I see in car I am sawing at the wheel like a NASCAR driver. I'll work on it.

I still get yelled at for the 10 and 2 but it is the shape of the wheel that forces me into that. I would rather be able to go 9 and 3 while learning as breaking bad habts is hard to do. In any case I am sure you have heard it all but with you hands up top there is little you can do for a major correction. Even if everyone told me about the hand positions (I still get lazy at times) watching my own vids is what made me improve hand position.

Re: Track Time

My hands are pretty big, those are XXL Alpinestars so I cover from 9-11 & 3-1 lol :D
LRP is all rights and 1 left so I just seem to bring the left hand up on top of the wheel, I promise to spread my hands out in 2 weeks.

Very cool--pun intended.

Re: Track Time

Today's Video of me slaying Godzilla at LRP. 540 whp 2012 model, definitely not Ron driving but it did have a g activated flipper rear wing, went full downforce under braking and cornering and laid flat under acceleration. Perfect day except for being black flagged in session 1 for 92db. Result is having to short shift the front straight for the rest of the day, costing 4 mph and maybe .5 seconds per laps.
Anyway enjoy, I did.
