Re: Track Time

Well sucks I deleted it then. I saw that size but thought people run wider than 275.

Basically: 888s have more grip but let go hard when they get too hot, the fronts usually. RA1s are squishier with less grip, but are very progressive. The rears got hot instead of the fronts. Can not brake as hard on the RA1s. The RA1s are a hoot to powerslide, even in a little 150 hp mouse car, because they are so progressive and do not bite you like the 888s, but the trade off is the max grip and also they are not as stable on turn in since they squish around a bit. I had to be a lot more careful letting off the brake and trail braking to keep it from squiggling at turn in.

888s are faster one lap due to grip, RA1s are faster over a long period because they don't go off as much when they get hot.

Also, there was a 12 Boss and a 13 Boss, both PW, at Thunderhill. I talked to the 13 guy and he was having misfire codes and had the top and bottom grill completely out. He was running Hawk HP+ with the ducts and said they were holding up fine. I never figured out who was driving the 12 so didn't get to talk to him.

Was he using silver or red key when the misfires happened?

Throwing the misfire codes isn't necessarily related to overheating or specific to either key. I've thrown the codes with both keys even though the red key was supposed to eliminate them.

Cali was he overheating and going into limp mode? I'm purpously staying away from TH in July and August.

How the car heats up and cools down is also going to be dependent on the driver as well.

I see a fair amount of guys pit out right after the checkered flag is waved. It is very important to do a cool down lap, especially in the warmer weather; you should shift up to keep the RPMs low and try not to use the brakes.

Just under a month away from resuming track activity here in the Valley of the Sun...tick tock tick tock!

What's the matter, being towed out of the asphalt is no fun? ;)

Re: Track Time

Hehe, yeah something like that.

Groups out here run "beat the heat" events that start at 6am and end at 10am, but I'm too lazy to be at the track at 4am to get everything ready. Plus there are no TT points at any of those events so why burn up track tires for that.

Next event is at INDE Motorsports Ranch, which you guys may have heard of from reviews of BOSS vs. ZL1 and a few other recent comparos. It's a killer track out in the middle of nowhere, very technical.
I'm hoping to drop 3-4 seconds off of my previous best time there in the BOSS from a combination of suspension improvements, better tire (R6 instead of NT01), and bigger cojones.

We shall see come Labor Day weekend :)

Re: Track Time

Results were in the E30, much lighter and less powerful than a Boss but the relative characteristics I would guess will be the same.

I don't know the details on the 13 Boss, I talked to the guy briefly but my GF was with me running my car too so I was running around a lot. He said the only code he got was the misfire and it happened a lot, and he didn't say it actually overheated but he had the grill plugs out Saturday then the whole grill top and bottom out Sunday so I assume he was having heat issues. He was running a lot faster than me so I didn't get to see what he was doing as far as cool downs. The 12 was in 1/2 I think but I did not notice if the grill was out. I couldn't find the owner so I couldn't get any info. My E30 is going in for an overhaul as it has been running the same timing belt and water pump, etc for 3 seasons so I may take the Boss out next time if I can get the ducts in.

Re: Track Time

Just got back from 2 days ay Watkins Glen. Had great weather, about 80 degrees and dry for the most part. Car ran great, no temp issues, ect, etc. Couple of guys out there with new TTRS's who weren't familiar with the Boss. Now they know what my rear license plate looks like from a distance ::)

I'm finding 37 lbs hot front and rear on the Nitto's seems to be working very well. Our advanced group had some insanely fast cars this time: 2 Ferrari's, a Porsche Turbo, and a tuned ZR1. Also had the typical spattering of GT3RS's & GT3's. I was invited to particiapte in the clubs IC Program (IC = Instructor Candidiate) which was a great milestone to get to. In my main club (Audi Club of New England) you are required to train for up to one full season before becoming an instructor, the process is similar to the PCA I believe. It's great to look forward to being able to pass on the sport to others by training them. And the perk of no reg fees for the events ain't shabby either ! ;D

Re: Track Time

Congrats! Nice. btw, I was running 39psi hot on my stock pzero's, 32 psi cold. 2 days at Summit for NASA this past weekend. Only got the backend loose a couple times....not enough!

Re: Track Time

Ron retired from driving. He's too old for it anyway. He still has the playbill from the night Lincoln was assasinated ::)

(He's on his way to WG now actually....)

Re: Track Time

Pete, how did the TTRSes look in your mirrors? Magazines (and allegedly Audi, per the magazines) keep saying they are faster than the various R8s. I know driver skill has a big impact, but did they look like they had the potential to be as fast as claimed?

Very cool Pete! I'm an instructor out here but our groups don't give us any free track time :(

Not all clubs do. Here in New England the Audi Club and SCDA does. BMWCCA & NASA may, I'm not sure. PCA does not.

The TTRS is not anywhere near as fast as a V10 R8. I have a good friend that owns one. Not even close. I would take an educated guess that it could not keep up with a V8 R8 either. The TTRS is heavier I believe and the V8 R8 engine is no dog. I owned a TTS that was heavily modded, effectively turning it into a TTRS with a DSG paddle shift (shifts in 1/10 of a second with the HPA DSG software I had installed). The car's platform is all wrong, the wheelbase is too short and the quattro drive system is much too front wheel biased to be able to rotate the car effectively in the turns. The front brakes are underventilated and overheat very easily.

My Boss did a good job of gaining time in the turns against it, totally killed it on putting the power down coming out of the turns (big time, even with it's AWD), and was able to overtake it on the straights (did not totally toast him, but passed him fairly easily and he could not keep up).

It's a nice DD performance car, you can drive all year long rain or snow. In my mind it's not a track car at all. For the price, if you felt compelled to buy German I'd take a Cayman S any day of the week and mod it a bit up to about 380 HP. And we all know what a Boss does with a Cayman S... ;D

Re: Track Time

Interesting, as magazines have been saying it is faster. Maybe they meant just vs the V8 R8. Audi doesn't even send the R8 to shoot outs anymore, as they said the TTRS was faster. But I suspected it was mostly because the TTRS is a newer product.

I live in CA, so AWD is just a waste of gas unless it says VIII or IX on the back ;D

And I know first hand how a Boss will abuse an E30 BMW.
