I just purchased a 2012 Boss 302S. Does anyone have a ProCal II tool with the Boss 302S tunes that they want to sell?

I recently purchased Jason's 2012 Boss 302S. It arrived yesterday. Really cool car.

Dumb question: Where is the fuel quantity gauge? The AiM unit has the fuel used totalizer but I'd like to know how much gas I actually have in the tank.

Original 302S’s and 302R’s built by Ford do not have fuel gauges.

Hi Jason. Thanks for the info. What's the fueling strategy for these cars?

Congrats on your new ride. There is a bit of a learning curve you will have with the 302S. The true factory 302S cars don't have many of the features you might expect if you think of it as a converted street car - and a fuel gauge is one example of something the car does not have.

There is no provision in the AIM system to read out the level of fuel in the tank (not sure the fuel level sending unit is even in the tank or if it is wired as I have never pulled the fuel pump assembly), just the totalized fuel used is displayed and recorded in the AIM system.

The simple method to monitor fuel level is to just fill the tank your first time out, and then do mental math or use a paper log to track the fuel used each session as displayed on your AIM. After a few sessions you can optimize your fuel load, but it is inherently inaccurate and open to human error (i.e. running out of gas). Going this route often leads to carrying a larger fuel load (i.e. weight) than may be required in a sprint race setting.

If you want to get more precise about fuel level, serious racers actually drain the tank after each lap session by disconnecting the fuel line at the fuel rail on the engine and then using a jumper on the fuel relay in the trunk to run the fuel pump till the tank is drained. Then the fuel tank is filled with just enough fuel (with a bit of a factor of safety) to run the required race length. This method ensures the car is as light as possible throughout the race.

As for your question on the ProCal, it may be a challenge to find someone willing to sell the tool. You can still buy the tool from Ford Performance. It seems that the tool is being replaced by laptop software and so the tool may no longer be available soon if I understand Ford's marketing material. You can also contact Ford Performance Technical support and they will likely be able to supply the required tunes for you on your new tool. The tech people have been incredibly helpful to me in answering all the questions I have had about my car - build a relationship with them. If this doesn't work, let me know and I will see if I can pull the tune files off my ProCal (if this can be done).

Getting a fuel gauge put in my Boss 302S , so will let folks know how it turns out? Not going through the AIM system and am hoping for success , as it is a royal pain to constantly have to ascertain how much fuel is in the tank?

Have to ask my Fabricator what he did , as have had two friends use a rather well known Mustang guru rig up fuel gauges and both of them told me they did not function properly, so hoping I have success? Sure appreciate the info , 5, and will pass it on if needed?

    Thanks for the info, guys!

I'm looking forward to getting this car on track. I'm baselining the maintenance right now (replacing all fluids, update the FIA seat and harness, safety inspection, refresh brakes, etc.), and should have it on track within a few weeks. My goals with this car are to race it with a local vintage group (lower risk of contact) and also time trial it with NASA. That reminds me, I need to add numbers and class designations!

I used to own a Spec Miata that had the Iron Canyon fuel sending unit and that worked well for that car.

I've talked to a rep at Ford Motorsports about part numbers for certain items and I hope to hear back soon.

Lucky for you Apex is in your State , as this car needs bigger rubber than the 275/18s they originally were run with?

It definitely is a good idea to have the 302S/R owners stay connected as these cars move to new owners and to help share the knowledge we have. Probably would be a good idea to actually have a thread around 302S/R knowledge base and technical questions separate from this registry thread. Anyone that has tried to buy parts from a Ford dealership that does not have knowledge of the 302S/R will know how hard it can be to get the right part ordered (there are many unique non-production parts). There should also be a thread set up for the FP350S & GT4 registry. Being a newbie here, maybe a TMO Addict might better handle that item.

We are actually pretty lucky , because a separate thread would probably not see much activity with the super tiny numbers of Boss 302S and Rs were built, but with Blacksheep1, AZBoss, and Andrew Aquilante , to name a few , we have friendly resources that will often reach out a hand. Pretty sure Phoenix Racing can sell us some parts too, ha? Like your idea , but fortunately I have found this is the place where BossS, BossR, and FP350S and GT4 folks need to hang , as TMO has more track addicts than any other Blue Oval Forum I know of.Many here , kindly offer a helping hand, thought , or direction when needed. Understand your frustration , as we have 3 Ford Dealerships, but if you are not tied into ( and pay for ) Ford Performance Parts , the access is tough for regular Dealers. Part of the reason you see companies set up to sell these items directly , and they usually warehouse tons of items. A short registry to list who has these cars is a good idea , though , as it would at least help us find each other, though I imagine the main answers and help will continue to come from those listed above and others until we are get schooled on our cars.
