PSA: MT82 Fluid For Track Use

Just as an aside, For the 9310 alloys in the Calimer Stage 3 gears, talked to Geforce about what oils to use, and they recommended staying away from Redline, Royal Purple or Lucas because of the additives they use. They use Synergyn or Tribodyn 75w140 mixed with Mobile 1 ATF.

I am sure nothing new here. Stock MT82, 90k miles. Who knows what's in there now. When cold there is a slight notchy feeling going into 2nd and 3rd. Shifts slow as well. Once warmed up seems OK. 1st oil change, trying the BG syncro shift based on the below and some other posts.

Will report findings.

The best tyranny fluid I ran in the MT82 was Motul DCTF. Ran that after the rebuild on the advice of the trans rebuilder. It worked very well. Still have a bunch left if anyone wants some. Can't use it in the tremec. Ford specs Mercon LVF auto trans fluid for the 3160.

I guess you didn’t do much drag/street racing with a manual transmission 🤔🤔 I started drag/street racing at 16 with my 64 Falcon Sprint with 10 bolt top cover 4 speed. I’m 67 now and still shift that way when I run against another acceleration run.
Now for road racing I lift the gas pedal when shifting.

I guess it all depends on the usual variables of weight power tires etc. Even a tremec XL would not last long powershifting at over 7500rpm with +600hp to the tranny in a 3600+ lbs car with slicks. Sure wish it did because the idea of a automatic car leaves me cold. Never mind a supercharged drag mustang with +700rwhp.

This thread was a very interesting read. But in the end, after so many years what I'm getting is that there's nothing close to a consensus even among varying groups of experts.

So I just had my MT-82 rebuilt with AMP parts at TX Drivetrain Performance. They're recommending Dex 3 ATF. They filled it with Valvoline at the shop.
Calimer is recommending Amsoil 75W-90 MTF from what I understand.
I see that @Fabman likes Amsoil ATF for his Tremec.
Motul seems to have a fair following and so does BG. But with BG I'm reading that some are blaming it for problems and that Calimer isn't using it anymore which is concerning.
And of course there's the Motorcraft (Castrol?) DCTF. My mechanic likes the OEM stuff with BG additive.

I've seen a lot of people who like ATF so I did some research on the difference between ATF and DCTF and what I'm seeing is that DCTF is designed to provide more wear protection for the synchros but that ATF may be a little smoother in use?

At first I was thinking that because of the rebuild and the different materials that are being used, that the fluid recommendation would need to change due to this. But now I'm thinking that while that's part of the equation, maybe it isn't the real reason for the recommendations I'm getting. I think probably the most significant change factor I'll have will be that I'll be running AMP kit synchros. I don't know what they are (here's the link) but TX Drivetrain refers to them as, "carbon friction rings". The AMP site just calls them synchros. I'd guess that they're Synchrotech clones...

How much do you guys think that the varying MT-82 gear sets should come in to play when choosing the transmission fluid? I always thought that Calimer's recommendation was due to the carbon synchros. Is that incorrect? Are these all just the wide ranging fluid recommendations and it doesn't really matter what components are being used? If that's the case... I'd be tempted just to go back to the Motorcraft stuff...

Update: Found an explanation as to why TX Drivetrain recommends Dex 3 ATF. They believe synthetic fluids cause excessive wear on the synchros. They recommend the same fluid for Tremecs which is what they really specialize in.

Any updates to this thread?
My son has an MT82 and its starting to get notchie in 5th gear (of all gears) and hoping to drain/fill shortly to look for metal and also hopefully help with shifting.

BG Synchroshift II is what I use for racing Sal. When you drain do it through a paint filter, any black plastic like grains are synchro material and indicate wear. They typically don't shed metallic particles unless there is some significant damage.

This is a street car....same fluid?

Order with MGC additive no no additive?

Sal, fifth is usually the first one to go with the stock MT82. Followed by third and then 2nd. Don't ask me how I know!

I was waiting for your input, I know you’ve been down this road.

I have run the additive but don't see the need and never felt any difference. I speculate it is an additive package that wasn't in the original spec Motorcraft fluid that they added as a band aid to slow down warranty claims. Wouldn't waste money on it.

Mad is quite correct on the crazy situation with the MT82 and 5th gear. I got my first Boss 302 used and it was the only one actually had to get the transmission repaired and it was to replace 5th gear. I noticed with both my 2012 and 2013 that second gear was notchy when cold, but that never bothered me since for close to 6 decades I was used to many manual transmissions having to warm up before shifting smoothly. Tracking both my 2012 and 2013 my transmissions both held up , as did my clutches , but I changed the transmission fluid super often . I never went more than 3 track weekends , so that could have been part of the luck I had.

So pleased my GT 350 and Mach 1 had Tremec T3060s and of course my Boss 302S had a T 6060. Robust transmissions in those cars and often when asked why I recommend a GT350 or Mach 1 to folks that ask. Super impressed with the Mach 1 with a Handling Package and I think as the years go by it will become an unsung hero and finally a bigger " Star " for Mustang Trackrats than many other models.
